Envious Detailing: AUDI SAVE???

I wonder how much clear you too off to fix that. No paint guage?

Yakky, this is a leased car, getting turned in in a few months...trying to save the client 1000's in fee's for damaged paint

So what's the moral of the story here, never buy an off-lease car because it may have no clear left? I wonder what the dealer would have done if he had turned it in that way, repaint or do what you did?

Yeah, I'm just curious about how much you had to remove to fix that.

If I would to venture to guess from past experiences, I would say .5 - .8 mils, so if this was the first time this car was cut down it should be okay as the paint still has ample thickness.

Cheers,

GREG

toyotaguy- I'm late to this party, but I always sympathize with people working on Audis, and this is quite a job to say the least! I'll be looking forward to the final pics, but what you've posted already is, IMO, the *reallly* impressive part of the job :xyxthumbs

Well, I'd wonder about it on any used vehicle. I'm always posting about that *really* nice P71 I almost bought last year...great looking paint, but that was because it was already thinned to the uh-oh point.

Unless you unwrap it yourself (new) or measure it (used), you just don't know.

Depends on the dealer. A guy I know just bought a CPO Audi that was almost that bad (yeah, really); he took it to *my* Audi dealer and they had to reshoot a few of the panels but the rest buffed out OK. Some Audi dealers sell disgustingly bad cars, others wouldn't be caught dead with such a thing on the lot.

All I know is the fact it was never resprayed or detailed before, therefore I know I have enough clear to work with, especially with it being so damn hard. Had it been a toyota or a honda, NO WAY would I have gotten that aggressive. heck even some of the light swirling was hard to budge, while some of the "brillo marks" are past the point of repair without repaint!

and if the dealership wants to respray it now, then it would have really wanted to before, so I see no difference!

and how much clear would have someone removed with sanding it all down???? I have to assume the same if not more, dont you think?

Excellent job my friend! I was on Culver yesterday and saw a black Mercedes SLK that looked WORSE than this one when it comes to those deep hard wavy scratches! I couldn't believe it! I now have seen it all...

AND ITS DONE!!!!! HAHAHA

I figure it to be about 90% overall, perfected in most areas, with lots of deep deep deep scratches in other areas needing a repaint!

27 hours total on the car with all the breaks and timeouts! 10 hours on monday, 10 hours on tuesday, and 7 hours today!!!

Pics to come later tonight, time for a surf session as soon as I get back home!!!

nah, flat rate and a hook up of a lifetime...lol = me not coming out anywhere near my hourly rate, but knowing I probably saved this guy a ton of money come lease time - that makes it worth it!

Eric, nice talking to ya the other day buddy. Glad ya finally got it done. Now go enjoy yourself.

DJ, thanks for the tips!!! Nice talking to you yesterday! what would you say to WASHING the car with a degreaser instead of just spraying down each panel...hmmm?

Wow! 27 hours over 30 minutes wash with a brillo pad, maybe next time the owner will think twice. Great Job!

yeah tell me about it! I finished today and was thankful....that car needed some SERIOUS correction...air sanding with 1500/3000, then compounding, if not a repaint!!! Text from the owner of the car = "next time I'll have you take care of my car instead of my friend"

P.S. nobody get hung up on the price tag of this detail....its NOWHERE near what you all are expecting...yes the owner came out ahead

Looking forward to seeing the pics. Hopefully the owner learned his lesson and his friend stays away from any sort of car in the future.

On certain details, I will mix some diluted degreaser or APC in a foam gun and allow it to sit before doing my 2 BM wash with Citrus Wash or Wash n Clear mixed at the proper ratio. I'll use 3-4 oz of 6-1 degreaser, 2-3 oz of Dawn, rest water in a 32oz Foamer. Then once I pull the car in, I'll give it a nice IPA wipe down to make extra sure its ready for polishing.

Toyotaguy - do you have a full car before/after? I'm dying to see how it looked as a whole. Each panel made me cringe! But you did great work!
