Engine Detailing Part 2....

Clean Dean

Keep it clean !!!
One of my favorite threads on this forum was an engine detailing thread started by detailer perfectionist Anthony Orosco. Today I had a challeging assignment that had to be shared. Here is a pic of a 1987 560 SL that was LOADED with cosmoline, and needed good cleaning/dressing.

Tape...

I masked off the original engine decals, and prepared a bucket of Simple Green 50% and went to work with an assortment of brushes.

Metal...

All the metel components where cleaned with SG and 00 Steel wool and a lot of elbow grease...

Last pic ...

The aluminum components were cleaned then polished with Mothers aluminum polish and a couple of terry towels.

Oh yeah, dressed with Dealers Choice water based dressing.

The entire engine took me about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Looks great!
Simple Green 50-50 dulled some paint under the hood of our TranSport minivan and I haven't used it since. Whether it actually affected the paint or just stripped off all my wax, I don't really know. I just stopped using it. No problems with anything else I have used for the same purpose. (APC+, S100 Total Cycle Cleaner for instance)

I had a bad experience with a APC from DEP. The purple stuff. I have never had a problem with SG.

Hmmmmmm Mop & Glow where have I heard that at? ohhhhhhh yeah wheel wells. So mop & glow works under the hood? Might have to try that!

Here's something funny.. My wife had asked me a couple time to wash her car. I never was able to get to it so one day I came home from work and I noticed she washed it.. I was like hmmm.. I asked her what did you use to wash the Jeep. She said some stuff I see you using in the garage. I asked her what stuff?? I was getting a little worried at this point. She told me some stuff in the garage I think it's called Simple Green. I was are you playing around. Good thing she only used very little. I was up all night waxing the car. :O(

A careful read of the 1987 MB owner's manual specifically cautions against removal of the "engine wax".
It is designed and intended to remain for the life of the vehicle.

oops.

THANKS !!! I've seen your work, and a compliment from you means a lot !!!

Mop and Glow ??? That stuff is made for floors, isn't it ???

If you detail an engine and something goes radically wrong I would hate to explain to thay customer that I sprayed Mop and Glow on the engine of their $75,000 car.

I started using a water based dressing from Dealers Choice. It is made by Automagic's parent company, and I think it looks, smells, and works as well as Super Dress-It at half the price !!!

Dean that engine work you did is simply amazing that engine looks new. Where can I get this Dealers Choice Water based dressing. I need a good water based dressing for engines and wheel wells. The new Meguiars Detailer water based dressing is to pricy.

Mop N Glo is similar to Engine kote I hear, I dont care to much for coating sprays though.
