Spring is here, and I'm getting ready for serious engine cleaning -- on the white '75 Jag XJ6C which is in pretty good shape, and on the '93 Benz and white '75 Jag which have never had Autopian-quality attention. I've done a fair bit of reading here about engine cleaners, but am curious to see what has worked for other Autopians. I'm sure I have not listed all the "favorites" here, so please feel free to click "Other" and explain what's your favorite.

Lynn- Didn't notice the poll until now 
. The last time I cleaned up something grungy, I used Griot's Engine Cleaner. I think it's like your EF Citrus. And if you haven't used it before, you'll like the EFHI- good all-purpose cleaner. I WOULD, however, be a little careful about letting any of these cleaners sit for long on polished stuff like your valve cover. I've never had a problem, but still..
Once you get it nice, I imagine you'll primarily use solvents on the white coupe, stuff like 3M adhesive remover, Wurth Cleans-All, rubbing alcohol, etc. I usually just use those if regular car wash solution won't cut it.
Stock up on LOTS of different swabs and brushes!
Having just cleaned up the worst of the XJS's engine bay mess (just well enough that my mechanic won't get filthy while poking around in there), I envy you your 6-cylinder for a number of reasons.

I've using Poorboys APC diluted 3 to 1 for engine cleaning. 1 to 1 when they are really bad.

How do you guys know what to cover up when blasting out the engine bay? I know almost nothing when it comes to under the hood, so I've been hesistant to power wash out the engine bay after soaking it in degreaser.
