Engine cleaning..

Okay, let me start with the fact that I don't want to use a hose at all. I just don't trust myself soaking down the engine bay, even with all the electrical parts and neccessities covered. So I am planning on using Meguair's all purpose wipes (supposed to be non-abrasive) to wipe down the engine bay. Will this suffice for cleaning/de-greasing?
 
Are you doing this to the 02 A4 1.8T QUATTRO? if so I would say that the engine couldnt be that dirty is it? I have used Simple Green and rags to wipe down motors before that were just dusty and dirty Not to old and oily. I have never used Meguair's all purpose wipes before so I cant help you there. If you do try it, let us know how those wipes work :)
 
it depends on how thick and caked on your engine bay is. then you have to figure out how to get it into all the little nooks and crannies. i think it'd be a lot harder to do it this way.
 
if you wipe down your engine bay at least once a week, there shouldn't be a need for you to reach for the hose anytime soon... :)
 
I think that simple green and a rag should be enough. I asked my service manager at the dealership about it and was told that, at least for the volvos nowdays, that all the sensitive wiring were protected and water is used (with a hose :D ). I presume the similar would be for you, check with your dealer/mechanic.
 
I can see doing my engine with just wipes. Of course, I keep my engine pretty clean. If you stay on top of it then you should be able to do it like these guys were saying. Simple Green and a towel would be all I needed to use at this point. Still, don't let a hose scare you too much. Its a really good way of getting parts that aren't going to get damaged clean. Areas like your firewall and your wheel wells. At any rate, if its clean enough to handle with wipes then go for it. I would just hate to have to tackle some of the engines I've had to do and only be able to use wipes. lol (shudders with fear)
 
Dont be worried about using a hose on your engine, just cover any exposed electrical parts with plastic and you will be fine.



Dont forget, when your driving in the rain, your engine gets a good dose of water, but that does not stop you from driving, does it? A pressure washer may be able to cause problems if abused, but I think you would have to try hard.



On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with doing it by hand, just give your self the choice.
