Edit: My definition of boutique is a product that you would normally have to purchase of over the internet, while non-boutique would be products that are commonly found at retail stores.

I have only used Simple Green. May not be the "best" but I can definately live with this product. Plus I get it at the all-mighty COSTCO:usa

I voted for the P21s TAW because that's what I reach for most often. But Griot's Engine Cleaner works well on dirty ones, as does Hi-Temp's engine cleaner (mine's not labeled "Xtreme Clean" but rather "Engine Cleaner", but it's kinda old). EFHI is one of my favorite APCs, but it doesn't do much for me on jobs like this.

I'd sure be careful with Simple Green, people have had it discolor aluminum. I'd sure hate to have to pull an engine apart to get things refinished because I used the wrong cleaner.

I like Meguiar's Safe D-Greaser. It has a little more punch than APC but it won't turn plastic/rubber grey like some other cleaners will.

Power Purple (You can view the MSDS sheets for their products) Clean-Rite - Solutions for a Cleaner World

Castrol Super Clean Cleaner & Degreaser (can't find website)

I use both, pay $5 a gallon at WalMart and dilute it for all my interior and exterior needs from vinyl to paintwork.

I swear by them.

I use Meguiar's APC+ as my next favorite for interior work only. Works great on leather 12:1.

I'm debating betwwen the FK and the Megs' APC for this spring for the greasy work. I used the FK on my bike engine and it did good without oxidizing any polished aluminum too bad

I'm also wanting to try the CD-2 Engine Detailer if I can find it OTC

Last year, I wiped down the plastic and hoses (they weren't greasy) with a terry towel with M34 and M40 on it..and it looked really good for several months
