Engine area

Hi all,

I want to detail my engine area..

The paint on the inside is pretty clean. Just very muted with some over spray and orange peel. I’m not expecting and depth or gloss. But a shine and maybe some reflection might be nice. I took some DACP and a linen cloth to a small patch. It cleaned up pretty quick but I was hoping for a better look so I kept at it. Well lets say I stopped before I do anything too major, but I do now know what color my primer is. Linen is very abrasive. D'oh.

I had mentioned this in passing to Dwayne and he noted that the paint won’t have any clean coat.

So what should my first step be? How about #9 and maybe one of those soft diaper looking cloth that I bought from a parts store. Use that just to get the over spray off. Then just use a glaze or something ith MF only?.

Also since there is no clear coat how much attention can I give it?

Also is there a super sealant that I can put on buy hand? The engine will be out for a few weeks and I want to hit the area hard. Unfortunately I might have to work out side in cool temps. But I'll be able to reach areas that are hard to get at.

How about the brake lining and (I assume what is aluminum) that is on the end of hoses. I was using aluminum polish but it seems to leave slightly different shades. Maybe its just not meant to be polished.

I also have some restoration question. Like how to paint a frame. Is that subject off-topic for this site? Maybe ask in the off topic forum??

TIA

Maybe you should PM Jngrbrdman, or look at his site where he has a write up on engine cleaning. He has one of the best looking engine bays I have ever seen with regard to reflectivity and shine. Very nice guy too. Also, I have seen a lot of Clean Dean's engine pics, and they too are amazing. Either one could probably give you some good tips.

Thanks for the replies.

Most of those links talk about grease removal. The engine is being removed and rebuilt.

I'm look for more info on how to treat the rough, non-clear coated paint. I tried the QD , glaze level that Jngrbrdman suggested but I need to be more agressive.

I'll try and take some before and after pics. I'll just start simple and try a few things. If I can I'll post my results.

And I can't find the CD2 kit, any thing else close?

Aloha Indy , I don't know that there is much you can do with the underside of hoods and fenders as far as gloss or shine. I use a spray wax on those or a quick detail spray. Of course I never really tried to get it shinny. Pls let us know if you find something that gets the results you're looking for .
