E46 M3 design, ever to get dated?

Curious. With the releasing of the new 3 series coupe, and the highly expectated M3 to come out in another year, would you guys then look at the current (e46) M3 as dated.

I look at the current M3 and it seems soo attractive. Then I look at the currently released 3 series coupe, with ideas of how the upcoming M3 will look like, and although it looks promising, it also looks like the flavor of the month type design. Not anything close to what the current e46 M3 has done.

Opinions, comments, all welcome.

Yes - it will look dated. Happens to every car, despite people not wanting it to happen.

I had an e36 M3 ('95), and I said the same thing about the e46. Let's face it. The e36s look very dated now.

Hate to tell ya: you're (your car) getting old. You can't stop it. :)

I think the E46 looks a lot better than the new ones - it's a much more timeless design. It'll look dated eventually though, only a few great cars have avoided that fate (GT40, some older Ferraris, etc).

Maybe it's a matter of perspective and idividual opinion...all our vehicles are at least one generation out of vogue, but my wife and I truly like 'em *better* than the newer ones. On the Bimmers, I bought the E36 because that's what I *wanted* (well, OK, I wanted a sedan too and they didn't make E46 sedans). One person's "dated" is another person's "timeless".

IMO far to many of today's cars are simply *ugly* and will be considered hideous in a few years. But you folks know how, uhm, set in my ways I am when it comes to this sort of thing :o

To whos standards? It depends what you think of the car. 5.0 89-93 are my favorite cars. If its in condition, Its awesome to me!

If you like the M3, get it.

In terms of styling, the e46 M3 is certainly a looker; but there are little things that will start to look dated on it soon enough. In fact, in person beside an e92 I already think it looked dated. Of course I'm biased. :)

Vehicles are quickly "evolving" these days. Many great vehicles out there are dated, but dated doesn't have to be a bad thing. The E36 is still one of my favorites and it's been gone since '99.

Sort of like Polos and jeans - it's a classic (or timeless) look.

Wouldn;t it be cool if for a special fee, you can have the Original Automaker Build you a car that is no longer is scheduled production.

Like if you really wanted an e36 M3 but do not want a rebuilt engine or used car, but ratehr want a brand new car... That would be hot!

::sighs:: I dream too much while on the phone with clients. Back to work..

I don't think it will look dated yet. The E46 still has a shape that fits in with most other cars. I think the E36 - E46 was more pronouced with the facelift. That being said, the E46 M3 market will prob drop as everyone dumps theirs to get the hot new engine. You can already get a 2002ish M3 with low miles for around 30-35K which isn't too bad considering they cost about 60K new.

I got to drive an E90 (new 3 series sedan) this week as a loaner car and I hated the interior. The list of gripes goes on and on, so if the coupe is going to adopt most of the sedan's interior, I'm definately not missing out on anything......

Oh jeeze what I'd pay to be able to buy a not-deered version of my S8 :sadpace: My Audi salesman called up today and I was telling him this same thing as I broke the news to him that I wasn't interested in the new one.

DETAILKING- I know exactly what you mean about some of the recent changes, I seem to feel that way about every new Audi/Bimmer/Benz I sit in.

The interior is definitely a low point with the new 3-series. While I don't mind it, I think ergonamically it doesn't make a ton of sense. The materials and fit and finish are OK, but I wish they would offer BMW individual options on this side of the pond. Europe gets so pretty killer finish options (Merino leather, high gloss ebony trim, etc...). Regardless, I think it can be made better, and imo the engine/suspension more than makes up for minor interior gripes! :)

i had an e46 m3 cabriolet. i think it's one of the best-looking bmw designs ever. i don't think the new ones really hold a candle to it. however, imo, bmw's just don't age nearly as well as mercedes. i can only think of one generation of mercedes sl that i'm not incredibly fond of. the previous generation to this one. all of the others ones i find still reasonably comtemporary.
