Just finish prepping my car for the winter and I wake up to see my driver side door handle and surounding areas like shotgun blasted with gravel. I don't understand what could have caused it ? I will try to post pics tomorrow.

Well I echo that curse cause I sure can almost feel the pain... Could it be kids ? Some jealous neighbor ? I had this jerk of a neighbour who once keyed my car just because he couldn' t stand mine looking better than his... (He had the very same make and model of my car, a Renault Megane RTE)

Or a bit more remotely possible but was there a dust/sand storm last night at ..... err.... Montreal, Canada ??

Did you call the police and/or take him to court for it? :angry

sadly I would think unless he got him on video or something, he would have no way to prove it. But hey, what the law cant do anything about, metal bats more than make up for...

No, I had no proof other than my own eyes. A shopkeeper said he saw it too but when it came to calling the cops, he said he didn' t want to get involved in all the official crap to follow... So I had to drop it. I only cussed and cursed at him and told him about all my "spontaneous fantasies with his momma and wife" as though it would help... Well, after two weeks over the incident, he paid for the paint job since he knew I would retalliate bitterly...

Heres the pic.

I have filled all the damaged area with a glaze spot putty to highight all the pits and to prevent rust as winter is fast approaching and its dam cold to work outside. It penetrated through the clearcoat, basecoat and primer down to the metal, there even evidence of metal being upsetted so I had to flatten it with a screwdriver and some sanding to make it flush before I could apply the putty. The glass and molding have some pitted damage too as well as the driver side mirror.

Did someone shoot me with a shotgun ?, notice the damage under the handle, it can't be made with a regular scratch, its like something was sandblasted onto it, the damage is precise, notice the concetration of the damage is limited to that area alone. :furious:

wow. thats one of the weirdest things i;ve ever seen. i really have no idea who are what could do that

Yes very strange, I'm brain storming to understand what that could have came from.

honestly maybe it was a woodpecker lol. as for a sandblaster, who would sandblast a car to piss someone off lol? they might as well key the whole thing. and i doubt they'd just do it to a small section like that

Hey Ed,

Sorry to hear and see that someone damaged your car. I have no idea what may have caused something like that. Did it happen on Halloween? It is not a shotgun blast as you would have holes in your car, not scratches. I wonder if a Dirt Bike etc sprayed your car with rocks etc..?

I don't think someone threw one egg at his car, and then proceeded to clean the slop off. And a dirt bike or any kind of motorized vehicle would not be able to concentrate spray on a small area at the top of a door. It seems like it was caused by something handheld. I don't know what though.

I think someone deliberately did that. Someone that knows how you are about maintaining your car. They did that damage in that spot because you couldn't help but notice it right away when walking to your car.

they'd have to be pretty big cleats to reach behind the door handle, like the ones for aeriating lawns. someone held a huge dog up to your door and let it claw it to death? no that's a tool, something like a wrench or maybe a ratchet. you've got some marks that look like something skipping down the side of the door and some interesting repetitive shapes in there. I don't know what it would look like to take the sharp end of a tire iron to a car, but this may be it.

unfortunately, you can't help but try to rationalize the mentality of whoever does this kind of thing. waste of brainspace over some passive aggressive waste of skin. emphasis on aggressive. file a police report and call your insurance agent.

what a shame.

You sure someone (likely female) wasn't just trying to find the handle in the dark, and marked it with fingernail scratches? I've removed stuff that looked like that from other female-owned cars in the past, and they've admitted it's from their nails and fumbling at night to open the door.

For all I could see it definitely looks like it was deliberately and intentionally done. The pattern tells me that.

On the other hand I think up two scenarios where :

1) You or your wife or one of your kids was in the car and your family mutt was begging the driver to open the door thus standing on its hind legs and scratching the door with both its paws. (You know, that typical doggie gesture)

2) The area was already scratched with fingernails, absent mindedly rubbed keys, leather gloves etc and when you compounded and polished the area the scratches got much more visible than before and you did not notice it because you were just too consumed by another are of you car...

Yes I know I sound far fetched but what else can one offer as an explanation ? "Aliens from Cantauri-X came and did it because this is the only way they know how to communicate" ??? :soscared:

Sorry man... Good luck with it... It sure does not look an easy one... :(

Its was very weird, I was out on Monday evening(yes Halloween evening) last week and I noticed it on Tuesday morning. Either it happened when I parked at the restaurant for a late bite which I didn't notice when I got back in the car or someone did that over night. It also looks like something scratch the **** out of it as you see the linear scratches, but it also look like a blast of high velocity materials. Rock chips only chip the paint or dent the metal, this is neither. It looks better than it actually is on the pic. If someone did that, they would have to be very patient as they would have to concentrate pitting in such as small area. I'am stump to explain this, being a mechanical engineer I can't figure this out. Would throwing a glass jar while the car is moving cause this kind of damage ?
