Dyson...

So the old owner of another board made a post about Dysons, because he sells them. And he's done this before wish Finish First....hype hype hype.

So I like to poke around consumersearch.com at reviews, and I remembered reading these:

http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/upright-vacuum-reviews/index.html

http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/canister_vacuums/index.html

And I posted those. And the thread was deleted. Now I'm sure they're just dandy vacuum cleaners, but they do seem hyped up. Not to mention I picked up one in a store and they are very heavy. $500 gets you great suction, okay carpet cleaning, and a bad back. I don't know about that...

So does anybody here have any experience with them? I can trust Autopia to be a little more objective than...............that. :)

Yeah hyped, I recall reading a Consumer Reports article indicating a much cheaper Sears brand performed the same/better.

I have two friends that have them and they swear by them. As for being heavy I usually use the wheels to roll my vacuum around ;) I will have to check theirs out and see if it is worth the money or not.

We have stairs :(

I bought a vacuum cleaner a few years ago based on a Consumer Reports recommendation. It was a Panasonic Jet Vac upright.

It was the biggest POS vacuum cleaner we ever bought. The drive belt for the floor brush broke once a month, and to cost to replace it each month was $10.

We ended up getting a Kenmore canister model. We have had it for ten years now and it still works as well as it did when we bought it. Ironic ally, I found out after I bought it that Kenmore home vacuum cleaners were made by.... Panasonic!

LOL, Consumer Reports ratings are just suggestions. We have purchased according their "Best Bets" and "Top Picks" before and the purchases ended up being mistakes.

We have a Dyson. Yes, it is heavy but it rolls easily and it has great suction. Expensive but worth it IMO.

I have the Dyson Animal. It is honestly the best vacuum I've ever used. I went into the store looking to spend maybe $200 max and the sales guy showed me the Dyson. I laughed and told him he had 2 minutes to sell me the Dyson. He did. The suction surpasses anything else I've ever used. And for the stairs, the Dyson has an on-board hose that stretches something like 17 feet. I just put the "turbo" attachment (like the main brush, just smaller) and I zip through the stairs.

I know other vacuums have this too, but the bagless feature is really nice. We just moved into a new house and new carpets tend to shed for quite a few months. Each room usually fills the canister with carpet lint. I can only imagine how many hundreds of dollars in bags I would have gone through by now.

Bottom line, at least go give it a fair shot. Well worth it in my opinion.

Just for the record, a canister full of carpet fuzz is like a buffing pad full of paint. It's not a sign of a good vac. My wife and I bought a Kirby after seeing it demolish my $400 Hoover bagless. I could give the whole demo in words, but I'm not a typing salesman. The Kirby is not a bagless, but after seeing what the Hoover was NOT picking up and the Kirby did, it was a no-brainer. The first 2 bags we filled up with the Kirby, I cut open to see what was in there. Nothing but dirt, dust, mites, dead skin, and dog hair. Next to ZERO carpet fuzz. If it hadn't cost as much as it did, I'd be using it to vacuum cars and extract water (too bad it's not a wet vac). It does have a shampooer attachment that works great in the house.

My mom had a kirby for 15 years or so... they're big, heavy and expensive but they do suck very well...

She now has an Oreck and it works pretty well and is light.

I don't know what I have at my apartment b/c it's my room mates but I've always been interested in those Dysons. Maybe I'll get one when I move in August

My mom wants one so badly. She has an Oreck, Filter Queen, and an old Kirby thing. She was so depressed when my dad's friend told her the Dyson was getting crappy reviews. :rofl

I could never buy one, just because I'd never stop thinking about the inventor's (Mr. Dyson) annoying accent while I used it. :o

Same here. CR is very bad on audio recommendations also.

I use a Miele Blue Moon and it is bulletproof. I tried Panasonic, Eureka, Hoover and just got tired of dealing with breakdowns after 2-3 years of use. We have had the Miele for 6 years and it still works terrific. The bags are such high quality that chaging them is dustless and effective.

Consumersearch seems like a combination of all the tests. :nixweiss

But our vacuum cleaners usually last about 8-10 years. Sears and Hoovers. And an Electrolux that has been going for 17, and picks up better than the uprights we have had. This was when they made them plastic, but before they made them cheap. :nixweiss

The problem with aggregating is that sometimes you are collecting bad reviews. Garbage in, garbage out.

I have no real issues with consumersearch but many issues with Consumer Reports. They tend to not review many brands, even those that are affordable which biases results. Also their audio recommendations are so oriented on price points that good inexpensive audiophile brands are excluded, some of these simply due to limited availability.

Hey MongooseGA, heh heh I sure *like* Mr. Dyson's [Brit accent] "I just believe things should work properly.."[/Brit accent] :D But when I hear they don't actually *clean* that well I think I'll stick with my Sears Kenmore.

I have a Hoover Cannister from '87 that still works fine (it's my current auto-carpet vac) but the Hoovers (including an upright) don't clean carpet nearly as well as my Kenmore cannister. Like Gonzo0903's experience, our Kenmores have been great.

Intersting about the Kirby. I always compare vacumes by going over "already clean" areas and checking out the bag contents, got the idea from a Kirby (or was it Electrolux or a Rainbow?) demonstration way back in the '80s.

I also find the "no dust when changing bags" info about the Miele interesting.

Keep the vacume comments coming :D

Oh, and I had a few Orecks, including their "Big Red" commercial model. Awful, just *awful* performance. Sent 'em back.

I learned to vacuum in the "grid pattern" from this guy :D :

With 2 large and hairy dogs dogs I tended to go through vacuums every year or so. So when I got married 2 years ago we got a $250 Hoover, what a POS. Cheaply made, belts break, bump into things and the plastic cracks, etc. We bought a Dyson ($450) and love it. Its been nearly 2 years now and it looks/works as new. The design is top notch and it cleans better than the Hoover or others ever did. Now I cant compare it to a Kirby or some of the others, but Im happy with it.

We have a Phantom, and even though they do not make them anymore its the best I ever used. Amazes me what they pull up, and never carpet fuzz. Drawback is they break easy.

I had a Dyson for a few years. It is hard to say it was substantially better or worse than many competing (cheaper) products.

I remember reading some report which indicated vacuum cleaners tended to work better on carpets or hard floors but very few worked well on both
