Dynabrade 61384 - question

Hi everyone.



I found this one on Amazon for $92.



Does anyone know if I can fit my GG type DA backing plates in this model's head. I know there are Dynabrades that can take regular DA backing plates but not sure it this model 61384 can?



I dont want to chop the pad with knifes etc... just want to use it with my backing plates.



Also just to confirm this one has forded rotation + random orbita right?

Yes, it will take any standard DA backing plate, and is switchable -- but you'll never use the locked mode.



Don't plan on using spot pads (3-4") with it either.... the smallest you can safely go is 5.5" pads.
 
Charlie, locked mode you mean the forced orbital rotation?



I've hear you can get great correction in that mode... Do you crank the speed up to maximum on the rotary when using this thing?



Yes I'm not planning to go smaller than 6" pads.

Yeah; what I've found is that in the locked/forced rotation mode it doesn't feel anything like the forced rotation provided by a Flex 3401, and in fact it can be very difficult to control the machine and keep it from wanting to jump around, especially on curved panels. Might just be me, but I don't care for it.

In the regular 'unlocked' standard orbital mode, I find the correction ability is awesome due to the 3/4" stroke length. And if you've got a powerful rotary to drive it with (I use the 'new' DeWalt 849X) it does great with the speed dial topped out.
 
I truthfully wouldn't run the Dynabrade under a 6 inch pad. With its large orbit, Its actually designed to move larger pads. Proper balance is key with the dynabrade. I find myself using more with the

3D pads 7.5 inch pads. Man it is palanced perfect with them.
 
I have one gathering dust...used one time...for sale...if anyone is lookin to get one...i am in Thousand Oaks Ca...submit your offers....complete with two pads and a new backing plate!!

I'll second that. The locked mode is a pain to try to deal with.
 
I use mine only in locked mode for compound and polishing. It cuts so nice and quickly. I have flex used it only few times and never got use to that counter clock turn. I use rotary since 87 and this is an incredible addition to rotary buffers. You have to increase the rpm few hundred more than what you use for rotary, and move the machine slower to clean up the scratches. For good balance use it with pads 6" to 8", try to keep the pad as flat as possible to the surface to avoid the wobbling. Only down side of the attachment is big throw doesn't allow you to easly get close to the obstacles like around door handles and antennas etc.
