Dyeing my leather

That leather on the 05 BMW is coated, except for the area in the picture where the coating looks like it has been worn away. If one were to dye that area they might possibly match the color but not the texture and the dye would just wear away quickly leaving you with what you have now, IMO. Since the coating is gone that area will likely be a problem for you. I'd take it back to the dealer, as 96snake suggested, and have them replace it under warranty.

Ah, a lovely trip to the BMW service dept., where everyone is helpful and generous- NOT! OK, I'll try that. I'll keep y'all posted- thanks for the help!

What should I ask them to do- replace the whole seat?

I'd see what they offer to do, first. If they offer anything less than replacing the entire seat cover set (just covers -- no need to replace the foam, wiring, frames, etc.) ask to speak to the service manager about it.

IF, for some reason, they don't let you have new covers, you do still have some options away from the dealer. It's good to know those are coated, it confirms that I can safely give you an alternative cleaning method I just used on some coated GM leather seats. I'll work at getting everything put together for that later today... I want to be sure I can describe it in-depth so something (hopefully) doesn't get messed up on your end.
