I'm just wondering how long #20 and #26 will last? I plan on using #20 as a base, and topping with #26, and probably redoing #26 once a month or so(I wash weekly). With this regimen will #20 last 4 to 6 months? I'll probably polish my car with a light abbrassive(swirl free) once every 6 months, and dacp it once a year. Am I asking too much durability out of the products?
Now onto polish questions. I still haven't picked up my porter cable, but I plan to get one pretty soon. If I use DACP and swirl free, what kind of pads, and at what speed should I be using them?
Hi gbackus,
I hope I can answer your questions to your satisfaction.
As far as how long the #20/#26 will last question goes, I don’t know. What are you going to wash them with? How long a wax lasts depends on the environment it is in and how it maintained inbetween subsequent applications of wax.
I don’t think I will ever make a claim to how long any wax will last because that’s just an open invitation for a wax war. No thanks.
Find something you like and use it often
The above is the best advice I have ever heard for taking car of paint and the advice I have been giving since hearing it from a gentleman named Jack Anderson in about the 1989/1990 time frame. As far as I’m concerned, put it on my gravestone.
I started using #20 as a base for #16 about that same time when detailing cars for customers, back then I didn’t know today it would be called layering, or topping. It was just something I did to insure my customers finish would look good for a long time after I drove down the road. Interestingly enough, David Bynon was doing something very similar and we didn’t know of each other till years later. My how time flies and the world becomes smaller.
If you wash with a quality wash mitt and any of the below car wash solutions, I would think your coat of #20 Polymer Sealant, sandwiched by the #26 Hi-Tech Yellow was would last 4-6 months. #20 is a good product.
Check out the results Superior Shine achieved with #20 on this black BMW,
#20 as an LSP
As far as pads and PC speed goes for use with DACP and SFP, I would use the
W-8006 foam polishing pad with the #83 DACP, and the
W-9006 foam finishing pads with the
M-8232 Swirl Free Polish
You could also use the W-8006 to apply the #82 Swirl Free Polish, it’s kind of a personal preference thing, the W-8006 offers
more bite, or cleaning power than the W-9006 pad which is very soft.
For the wax however, I would hand apply, or use the W-9006.
As far as speeds go,
For removing swirls with the #83 DACP, I like to use the 5.0 to 5.5 setting.
For using final polishes like #82, or applying waxes, I like the 4.0 setting or lower.
Sorry for the delay in answering you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to post them and I’ll try to answer them faster.
Mike
