Durability expected for single coat of KSG?

You guys are probably tired of answering questions about KSG, but how long would you estimate a single coat to last this time of year with an ungaraged vehicle? Let's assume the weather is between 40-70 degrees and rain 2-3 times per week. Thanks in advance guys.

I really can't answer your question directly as my truck is garage kept and, being in Texas, hardly ever gets any rain. Also, I use KSGx3. With periodic toppers such as Menzerna HGAS or Duragloss AW after washes, I get six months easy. I also use a home brew of 3 parts distilled water and 1 part KSG in a mister bottle and use it like a QD. It does not clean all that well but on a clean car it is as good as any topper if your lsp is KSG. In the situation you described, my guess would be half that long or around 3 months.

3 months sounds pretty decent. I know most people typically add additional coats, but I've been doing cars for friends and family and will probably only add a single coat. I'm also going to try the distilled water mixture after the weekly washes on my car. Thanks for the response.

If you probably added to the 1 KSG application a product like Sonus Acrylic Glanz, WS Trigger or even DG AquaWax and applied after wash or two, you could get quite extended durability (the whole winter).

Yeah - any kind of true spray sealant after a few washes will really help extend the SG without having to apply a whole new coat of SG.

I think you are going to be hard pressed to see 3 months out of one coat of SG on an outdoor car.

I concur, I think 1 coat is going to last 2 months or so, at least in my experience. Despite what others have said about its durability, I was never too impressed with it myself.

While I get nearly unbelievable durability out of multiple layers of KSG, I agree that two months is about the limit for one coat. And I wouldn't bet my life on that second month ;)

FWIW, I don't see a reason to stop at one coat. I'd just apply more after each wash, even if you only do one or two panels.

I'd say it highly depends on the color of the vehicle. I have polished my black truck, aio'd it, and then put a layer of sg down, and have had the water stop beading in a month or less than a month. The sun beats down on the black as well as it getting rained on (possibly acid rain) a lot. I've yet to have anything last any longer though. On the other hand, my car is garaged, was polished, aio'd, and sgx3...and 2-3 months later the water still beads like crazy. I think it's mostly because the vehicle is garaged and silver, but I'm sure the multiple coats (with overnight curing times between them) certainly help. Now maybe a coat truly has protection that 'lasts' longer than the point where the water stops beading, but that's my measuring point..

I think you may have a point about the color. I have a billit silver Honda and, as I said in my first post, it is garage kept and hardly ever sees any rain. I also use SGx3 but after every wash (even if it is only with Poorboy's SW) I usually put on a topper of some sort - like Menzerna HGAS, Wolfgang Spritz, Duragloss AW, the home brew I mentioned above, and other products as well.

This routine gives me the six months of protection I talked about but to tell you the truth, I only apply AIO/SG every six months because I want to. I really don't think I "need" to. With the silver color, garage kept, constant use of polymer toppers and seldom seeing rain (let alone acid rain) I bet I could go on and on - maybe years - before there would be any serious deterioration. I don't want to get to that point of course and I want a good cleaner to remove any contaminents and a good sealer for the paint itself. The "pop" and "wow" as well as any extended protection, comes from my various toppers and QDs.

Not to hijack or steer away from the original poster too much, but that's interesting shortspark. I've never used any toppers of any sort..the only I've really had experience with have been qd's like griot's speedshine or megs quick detailer.. I guess it's probably old school of me to think that those 'spray waxes' that require no work don't offer any substantial protection or benefit.. Are there some designed to work with acrylic sealants vs natural waxes?

i'll contribute from my experience...

after polishing, etc... i applied 3 coats of SG, washed weekly, QD after every wash with sonus acrylic spritz, and applied p21s about once a month... very easily lasted 6 months, survived chicago winter, from september '05 to march '06... rain, some snow, and lots of sun, daily driver, street and highway

like someone said above, i only applied more SG because i wanted to do a detail on the car, and i don't think it needed more protection, since it was still good after 6 months... idk about the color of the car but that might be a factor since it heats up differently in the sun

Oh yes, in fact many of your "toppers" (inappropriately often called QDs even by the manufacturer) are part lsp. For example, I am pretty sure Sonus spritz is part KSG. Werkstatt's Acrylic Gloss is part Jett. Menzerna HGAS is part FMJ and I'll bet the same is true for Duragloss Aquawax and the Wolfgang spritz being diluted forms of their respective lsp. Some are called QDs but they don't clean very well, especially when compared to real QDs like Fast Clean and Shine or Poorboys SW. Accordingly, I would use a dedicated QD only for that purpose and would consider these others as "rejuvenators" of the lsp. They are of course meant to go with their own brand lsp but that is not necessary in most cases. I often use all of the above (and more) over KSG with equally good results - although some give more shine and/or depth than others, at least on my silver color.

One of these products that has received a lot of favorable press here of late is Duragloss Aquawax. This "topper", along with the others I mentioned, is not really a spray "wax" as the name implies but rather is polymer based. This is just the ticket for going over a sealant. I think AL53 here has tested Aquawax for a long, long time now and can attest to the benefits and protection renewal of such products, not to mention the boost in shine.
