Drying MF towels

So, I was minding my own business yesterday when my friend calls me and says, "Steve, what are you doing on Thursday or Friday?"

Thinking he has some free tickets to something, I said "Nothing." Big mistake...turns out he wanted me to detail his 740iL again. If you recall, I had cleaned it for him a few weeks ago...well, he took it to the dealer for a 60K Inspection II service, and as a bonus, the "detailed" it for him...

All of my hard work, down the drain - the car was swirled and covered with some sort of greasy crap (the wax they used). My fingers smeared the stuff if I touched the car. To make matters worse, they coated his tires (and half of the rocker panels) with some sort of oily, greasy, slimey tire dressing that wouldn't come off unless, of course you were driving the car. I scrubbed the tires four times each with straight Eagle One Tire Cleaner...went through two bottles of the stuff.

Here are some before and after pics. Sorry the lighting is different, but it took me a good 10 hours. Oh, and it was about 75F today!!!

I used:

Dawn wash (2x to clean the crap off)

Meguiar's Dual Action Cleaner w/yellow pad (1x)

Meguiar's #9 v2.0 SMR w/yellow pad (1x) w/white pad (1x)

Zaino Z5 w/ZFX (by hand, 2x)

Zaino Z2 w/ZFX (by hand, 1x)

Zaino Z16 on trim

TW TireGel 2001 on tires

Vinylex, Griots & Z2 on interior

I think you should send the dealer a set of before & after pics and a itemized bill for your services. Great job.

:up I applaud you!! Nice work with that Zaino.

BTW have your friend put a sign in his car next time he takes it into the shop. Mine is at the dealer right now getting suspension work done. On the steering wheel is taped the following message:

"PLEASE DO NOT WASH/DETAIL VEHICLE IN ANY WAY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN THIS MATTER."

simple, kind, to the point. If I go back later to pick it up and find a mess, I will go down several people's throats, in a not-so-nice manner. ;)

Wow, the guy must be really impressed with your handy work. Great before/after shots! Next time, tell him to be a little more careful who touches his car hehe.

Surely??? There is a better way of removing fabric softener from the inside of the dryer than what I do? Before putting my MF towels in the dryer, I spray the inside of the drum down with 50/50 alcohol and water and wipe dry. This is a pain in the rear when I don't want to hang all of them outside to dry. Is there something that could be sprayed on a bath towel for example and run in the dryer to remove the fabric softener. My wife uses the stuff and if I don't wipe the drum down the softener gets on the MF towels and hence they don't wipe worth a flip!

We use dryer sheets on regular laundry and it doesn't seem to affect the performance of the MF towels that are dried in the same dryer.

The dryer sheet has to be present in order for it to react with the MF towels.

When clothes tumble inside a dryer, friction causes an exchange of electrons on the surface of the materials. Items acquiring excess electrons become negatively charged while those losing electrons become positively charged. The items attract and cling together. The electric charge, which by some estimates can be as much as 12,000 volts, is commonly referred to as static cling. Dryer sheets are coated with positively charged substances that rub off on the clothes in the dryer in the presence of heat. With the clothes positively charged, there is no static cling.

Note: Dryer sheets contain carcinogens. You can purchase non-chemical sheets which have no fragrance.
