Driven Auto Detail: Prisoner Van (from hell!)

I did a cruiser for a neighbor of mine. I'm not a pro or anything, but I have learned a lot from on here and doing my own cars. Our officers get to bring their cruisers home when they are off duty, and they are required to keep them out of the garage and in front of their house. They are even encouraged to run to the store in them and such. It is to "promote a police presense." I just know that having the cruiser parked a couple houses down is a lot nicer when its polished up.

Once to thank me he let me pull my 17 y/o brother over (with him in the car of course), and boy was he scared till he saw who it was getting out of the car.

Thanks! I didn't finish down with anything after the rotary and compound just due to the fact that they weren't concerned with a perfect finish. They just wanted it to look better. Plus, some areas were developing rust so spending anymore time on it than I did would have kind of been a waste. I had to tape off the areas that were developing rust.

Very cool. Getting the "First One" done with the rotary is valuable and you did a great job!

i12flytoday,

Thanks!

amtrak23/3wide,

Thanks! Yes I did go over the decals with the rotary but very lightly and only to get to painted areas between the letters. I tried to stay off of them as much as possible otherwise.

Unfortunately, that's not my shop :( Although, I did just land a deal to work out of a fixed location through the winter time (being mobile during IN winters isn't possible). I'll offer pick-up and delivery service for like a 10 mile radius just to stay somewhat "mobile" for my customers.

Puckman,

This van isn't used a lot. Wednesdays it's used to transport prisoners to jail so that's the most work it sees. For the squad cars, I've only done some of the "higher ups" that aren't on patrol. I think if they were patrol officers, I'd have to do it on their days off.

Really nice turn around on that one!! I agree that it's more than just giving the "guests" a nice ride to the slammer, it represents the PD itself. I do the cruisers in my town and also the fire chief and captain. They say they really appreciate the work I do on the cruisers. Being an Autopian, I can't just leave it as "good enough" so I do a lot of little details they really don't expect. I agree with you, that for the work these vehicles see, they don't have to be show cars, but they do look good when done. And, it's not your average,

Thanks jim. I'm hoping to get more work from them, specifically their new Charger squad cars that are all black.

TH0001,

Thanks again! It means a lot coming from you! :bow

We have a contract with the local police, but we only wash/wax and do the interiors. Not too much you can do with a white impala that is less than 2 years old. They bring all their squads in twice a year and they just shuffle the officers around so they ride along with another.

One officer got chewed out because he left his AR-15 assault rifle in the trunk. :nono :rules:

mshu7, All black Dodge Chargers...sounds great!!! Lucky dog!! LOL They were talking about getting them here in my town, but opted for the old crown Vic. They did change the paint scheme though. They were all white, kinda boring for a cruiser. Now they have the two tone blue you see in the pics. It looks very similar to the staties here in MA.

Puckman, as far as I know, when I get a cruiser for detaling, it is off duty for the day, same as if it was in for work in the shop. The fire dept. is the same, but I would think they chief or capt would need it back in case of fire. All of their turn out gear is in the back. Hasn't happened yet...

Very nice work but since you spent all that time removing oxidation, why wouldnt you want to use more substantial protection than just aquawax?

The guys were closing shop so I needed something quick. Plus, the money I was paid was only to make it look better. They were already getting a good deal from me.

Thanks everybody! Good to see you around Bookeem. I don't really hit the MZ3 forum anymore...just too busy.
