This phrase haunts me as I contemplate doing some correction on my car.

Heres the details

Audi 2006 Brilliant Black Pics: Flickr: dlt21's Photostream

Swirls and light scratches

PC 7424XP

Polishes I have: Meg UC- Wolfgang TSR- SwirlX-ScratchX-Chem Guys Pro Polish 3n-Autoglym SRP- Optimum Final Finish

Pads: LC Hydro Cyan &Tangarine 5.5 &6.5

LC Orange ,white Black 5.5 & 6.5

After reading many posts for last 9 months I know Audi paint is rock hard. To any of you that have worked with a similar car please advise the best approach.

I do not want to waste a lot of time experimenting ,but also do not want to do anything stupid

thanks in advance

put the porter cable on 5 and try out some different combos. who cares if the clear is tough, grow a pair and handle it bro. you should waste a lot of time experimenting, thats how you learn.

It looks like you have really done your research. I would recommend getting some Meguair's M205 to follow up your UC. Use it with your LC black 5.5 inch pad, or your tangerine Hydro pad. I'd try the black pad first, and if it does what you need, stay with it. If not, step up to the tangerine pad. Then if you want to go for the ultimate shine, follow *that* up with some Menzerna PO85RD, again using the LC black 5.5 inch pad.

I know it's a pain to think about buying *more* stuff, but i doubt you'd ever regret buying the M205. You'll find yourself reaching for that bottle *a ton* over time. Especially when it's time to re-polish, cause you have a few swirls. 205 and either your tangerine or black pad will make quick work of re-polishing.

I'd consider the 205 mandatory, and the Menzerna optional.

You've done your homework, now go out there and give it a shot! And be sure to post your results (with pictures! :) )!

I think you'll grow to love that hard Audi clear. I'd *much* rather work on hard clear coat than soft.

Here's my brilliant black 2006 Audi A4 after M105 (5.5" LC Orange) and M205 (5.5" LC White) using my PC.

Can I sub the CG pro polish 3n or the Opt final for the M205 or is 205 that much better or different??

Also is UC ok or do I really need M105

Well, you *can* but I wouldn't. :) 205 is really "all that". Especially since you have really hard clear coat.

UC should be fine.

Edit: LOL, I see Pats300ZX lurking this thread... Probably saw the thread title, and thought "here we go again..." Merry Christmas, Pat! :D

Don't take this as an :argue, but on the Audi clear, I'd just use the Tangerine pad with the M205.

The black pad I'd reserve for any subsequent burnishing with some other product (like that Menzerna).

I absolutely agree 100%, and I was a *VERY* tough-sell for both M105 and M205, having done just fine on Audis for ages with other stuff that I liked just fine. Well, I'd *thought* I was doing just fine....

I finally relented and gave the M105/M205 products a try, and guess what I ended up buying gallons of ;)

While I do like to do a final burnishing with something else on certain vehicles, IMO there's no need to experiment with how to do Audis via PC, other than what pads you like; just get the M105 and M205 ;)

The supposedly moderate diff in cut between M105 and UC would make me want the M105. Believe me, even that doesn't work miracles on Audis (it's just better than anything else that can be used without a rotary).

And yeah, the M205 really *is* the best follow-up I've found, and I was determined to stick with my 1Z High Gloss.

Now as far as IPA/PrepWash wipedowns after M205, and doing some further burnishing...well, those are some topics that might be worth kicking around.

Note that I *do* like to further burnish Audis after M205, and that's with "just silver" paint too.

Accumulator, I'd never take anything you say as an :argue! You have *far* more experience with Audi clear than I do. :) I think most everyone here on Autopia would agree with me on this: you are one of the Autopian gurus that *everyone* looks up to for advice, whether or not it comes across as argumentative really doesn't matter. :D And if someone *did* take something you said as argumentative, well, they either need to get to know you a bit better, or check their Prozac prescription.

I'm liking and learning from this thread a lot.

So, SuperBee and Accumulator, you both like the hydro tech pads?

Santa says I'll like em. I've sniffed every present under the tree, and I'm *positive* I detected a hint of foam pad coming from one of the really light ones.... :)

I was suggesting his cyan hydro pad (since he already had it) as the one to use 105 with.

Got ya. I tried them for the first time 2 weeks ago. Did I like 'em? Well, I ordered some more, so I guess I do!

Accumulator,...[lots of nice comments]....

Thanks, right back at you.

BUT I *have* gotten into a few genuine :argue over the years, and maybe those incidents have made me more careful about not being taken wrong when I'm *not* really butting heads with somebody.

Not from first-hand experience, I've never even used one!

BUT...they're supposedly about the same as the Griot's orange foam polishing pads (same foam tech), which I simply *LOVE* if, and that's a mighty big "IF", the machine has enough power to get some cut out of 'em.

And even with a wimpy machine, those Griot's pads are great with AIOs and mild stuff.

SO...I keep telling people to try the HydroTech pads. Nobody at AutoGeek has said they're different from what I'm expecting, and a few people there have said they really are along the same lines as the Griot's.

CG Pro Polish is VERY similiar to Menz 106FF. It's just a notch down from it but it's pretty darn good. If you already have it just give it a try...what do you have to lose?

The CG stuff isn't very well known around here but I have M205, 106FF and CG Pro Polish and they all compare pretty well with each other. M205 obviously is probably the best but that doesn't mean you NEED it to do the job at hand. You can get the same results with any of the products it just may require more passes/effort. The pros obviously want to do things in the most efficient manner possible but us enthusiasts can afford the extra time required to make the product work for you.

Keep in mind I use a Makita Rotary and a Flex 3401 not a PC.

Good luck and happy holidays to everybody!

Looking at my CG pro polish it is very liquidity. Cant remember if it was thicker and broke down??

ABQDetailer is yours watery or more pasty??

Quick update

did test area on trunk using: UC PC set at 5.5 org 5" pad

Came out shiny.. very smooth , slick ... but scratches,(swirl marks) still there

ordered 105/205 will try again when they arrive

dlt21- Even with the M105 it might take numerous tries to get the marring out, don't get discouraged or think that something's wrong.
