Doing a wax test.

A few years ago I ran across this article:
http://www.nsxsc.com/nsexcitement/waxtest.html

I've thought about doing something similar for years and now I think I'm going to do it. I am going to replace the hood on my Scorpio and can use it to do a test. I am trying to decided which ones to get to test.

I've been using mothers polish, sealer and carnuba wax for the last couple of years. I also have Zaino that I've been using on my bike. I would like to compare those to some of the ones I've read about here.

I'm thinking about comparing against poorboys, pinnacle and wolfgang. I don't want to get too carried away because of cost.

What I'm looking for is suggestions on what products for each brand I should use. Each section of hood should have each mfg recommended prep products.

The hood has already been buffed and clayed. It only has a layer of carnuba wax on it right now and that is pretty easy to strip off.

The test will be a single blind. I will be the only one that knows what sections were treated each product. I'll conclude the test at a Merkur club meeting in August.

Here is a shot of the car so you can see what color I'm working with.

The hood is pretty large and fairly flat.

sounds like a good plan, just remember we like pics :bigups I like the product choice It will be intresting to see the results, my money is mon Pb

Vcallaway, is that the same car that you posted a few months ago??? If it is thats 1,000,000 times better!

I've also seen this test for Collinite, although it is against boat waxes (476s is the same as 885). I would love to see how the Collinite performs against the "big names". I've been thinking about doing it on my daily driver, just haven't gotten around to it yet (or buying the Collinite!).

I was wondering what happen with that car. Is it the same test car you were working on..

Same car.

The hood has a couple of bad paint spots. There are actually fingerprints embeded in the paint. Had to be done at the factory. It is currently covered in snow or I would take a picture and show you.

I have another hood that has better paint to swap on. I'll use the hood in the picture for the test.

Still looking for product suggestions to test!

I personally have tested several different types of carnuabas. The results surprised me. Not so much for durability but for looks. have found that i prefer the look of a liquid products.

I would like to see Pinnace Liquid Soveran tested. I would like to see UPP tested. I would like to see FKl #2180 tested. Another would be Jeff Werstadt's Acrlic Jet tested.

Have used some of these products. Some others I have not. All have purported good looks. Others have longevity/durability issues which up there value.

There is are drawbacks/pluses to using the hood for a test bed. Easy access for maitainence. It takes the biggest pounding as it goes down the road hit by everything. Suns heat does some eroding but I found engine heat to be a big item to consider at least in My tests.

Have fun with your tests!! I have two products being tested on my truck hood at this time. I like to keep it fun. Having a test bed for products on my vehicle gives me added incentive to maintain the look of the paint on my truck.

Good Luck!!

The hood is just going to be sitting in my yard. It is a spare part.

Having it on the car is not a fair test. Different areas of the hood are subjected to different conditions while on the car. By just having it sit out in the elements the entire surface is subject to the same conditions.

I've actually been very happy with Zaino. What I have is getting pretty old and I'm just about out of it. I've only been using it on my bike though.

Here is the plan so far. I'm going to section the hood into six sections. I will wash the hood and clay it again. Then a final wash using dawn to remove any wax residue.

Section one: Untreated
Section two: Mothers three step. Cleaner, sealer, carnuba wax.
Section three: Zaino (don't remember the steps off the top of my head)
Section four: Pinnacle Paintwork cleansing lotion, Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Wax
Section five: Wolfgang finishing glaze, wolfgang deep gloss paint sealant
Section six: Poorboys. -->> I need to know which products to use here <<--

The hood is large enough to do nine sections, but my wallet is not large enough. I'm currently using mothers and want to see how the others compare.

Things to evaluate on:

Initial score:
1) ease of installation
2) initial appeance

Every two weeks:
1) appearance prior to washing
2) dust/dirt
3) appearance after washing
4) feel after washing

How long should I run this? I'm thinking 12 to 16 weeks or should it be longer?

WooHoo! cwcad has offered to supply me with samples of SSR2.5, 1.0, PwS(beta version), and EX.

I'll get the rest of the stuff ordered on monday. We are right in the middle of a winter blast so hopefully I can get this started in a couple of weeks.
