Does anyone barter their detailing?

Thanks for the input, guys.

So far, I've worked out 2 barter agreements: 1) with the hardware store. I'll maintain his company pick-up for full-price and receive in-kind store credit. A good deal since I'm mobile and will get a lot of visibility from passing traffic while working on his p/u. I'm also buying stuff there frequently, so I'll get a chance to use my credit.

The second was with the ad exec of the local paper I'm advertising in. Check this out. She has a Lexus RX300, metallic champagne color (so I thought) and a pit. I asked if she'd be interested in a barter- she was interested. She admitted that she hasn't waxed the SUV in 3 years and it looked it. I did the exterior in exchange for a free ad ($60.00 value). After washing the car, it kinda looked like it might be silver rather than champagne. After compounding/polishing, I discovered the car is actually silver and it turned out quite nice. She's having me back next weekend to do the interior. The best part is I picked up 2 new detail jobs from her neighbors who saw me transform her car!

the paper deal is probably the best...but word of mouth is not something to barter for...you will never know for sure if they are telling people or not...I have a lot of friends i have done work for free for and none have turned me on to any other business except for one guy for a wash and wax.....even though they all say they are telling everyone, no one really is in my mind until i get the phone calls
