does a smaller pad = more cutting power?

I'm about to place an order at exceldetail.com for some new pads and was wandering: would a 4" cutting pad offer more cutting power than a 7" pad? Also, is this a reputable place to order from and does anyone have any coupon codes i could use there? thanks

Yes, the smaller the pad, the higher the cutting power. A lot of people use 4" spot buff pads for just that, spot buffing. I wouldn't want to do an entire car with a 4" pad (unless I'm using two of them attached to my Cyclo :2thumbs: ), but when it comes to knocking down scratches or any other defects, you can't beat it.

For general use, I think the 7" pad is too big. I, personally, like a 6" - 6.5" completely flat pads for the PC.....yes, 1/2" makes that much of a difference.

As far as coupon codes, I don't believe exceldetail does that, but if you email Patrick, he will help you out.

Certainly, a 4" pad will be more "aggressive"; I also agree that a 7" pad is too big. Even more than a 6", it will bog down the "spinning" action part of the dual action, and the results will be lacking because of it.

I am so much in love with 4" spot pads that I use them for everything except LSP application. They have quite more power in a PC. While the size difference seems huge, numbers can be deceiving. The area is quite smaller, but diameter is only 33% smaller than a 6" pad (or the diameter of a 6" is 50% bigger) so this means that the effective speed is 66% compared to a 6" pad. Given the additional cutting and polishing power in some cases I even save time using the spot pads. My big pads are used mainly for rotary work :)

If the 4" propels are as good as the 6.5", they are a very good bet. Personally, I think LC are as good as propel, but my favorites are the Sonus SFX.

I emailed Patrick and he informed me that they don't carry the 6 or 6.5" sizes because the 7" has been the most popular. Are there any other websites that carry both the 4" and 6" propel pad sizes?

No I only think Excel carry's propel pads but I'm not 100% sure. This thread just makes me want to put more money to a cyclo. Thanks a lot JDookie.

i think i'm going to place an order at bettercarcare.com. they have the 4" and 6" pads that i'm looking for. What size counterweight do i need to use with a 4" pad? Can i use the one that came with the PC?

Yeah, just use whichever one you already have. I used to use a 5" weight with the 4" pads, but the 6" one seems to run even smoother so I just leave that in place regardless of which size pad I'm using. If you have the 5" weight instead I wouldn't bother changing it.
