Do you wave to other drivers?

In my parts, you do the index finger lift when you pass people. Is that a southern thing? It similar to waving.

I usually only get the finger.
And they are not saying hello.

I only wave if they let me merge, turn, etc.

I remember going through a small town in Mississippi a few years back and every car waved. It doesn't make a bit of sense to me. I don't know you! Lol
