Do you really *need* a Carpet Extractor?

Thank you, David, that is the thread I was talking about!

I used to use AutoMagic's carpet and extractor solution, which worked just fine but I found from a cost- and time-effective stand point a general APC worked just fine for me. I still use a pre-spotter if the situation deems it necessary.

how's the carpet cleaner rental unit at the local supermarket?

I wanna know as well...I'm going to rent one in the next few weeks, so I wanna know if I can use it in my cars as well as my house.

David Fermani,

I'd be interested to know your manual carpet/fabric cleaning methods. I'd like to be able to get my carpets, etc., as clean as possible, but can't really afford to invest in an extractor at this point. Have you every posted a tutorial?

I'm just a hobbyist..but I love my Bissell Little Green Machine..I'm sure it's not the best tool, but it's a heck of a better than by hand and you can also use it for the house, so it's easy to justify to the SO..

I'm in the process to working on one and will post it a.s.a.p.

Even for the weekend warrior, a Bissle Heat Treat Machine available at Wally World and various other places will pay for itself in both your auto and home within a month or two. I use the thing reliably many times a week, and if it breaks, I can easily pick up a new one :xyxthumbs

The bissel is what I plan on getting too. Just for that occasional use, so hopefully will serve the purpose

Yes, you need an extractor to do a professional job. I use my extractor on every detail. I'm surprised this is even being debated. Professional auto detailers use carpet extractors on every job.

Just my 2 cents,

I've gone from a Little Green, to a Durrmaid and now have a Mytee Spyder. Extracting is only part of the solution, your pre-spray and agitation is also very important. Paul (2old2change) and I attended a class at Advantage Marketing in Indy on spotting back in the spring and I learned quite a bit. Since I switched from using an APC to a designated carpet pre-spray mixed with some Citra-kick added to it and I let it dwell for a few minutes, I then go over it with my steamer with a brush attached to it. (I was using a power brush on my old PC), I use a rinse agent/emulsifier in the extractor to reduce wicking and extract the carpets, I have to say the results are better than anything I have done in the past...

IMO, The best thing about a Hotwater extractor is just that, the hot water and the lift!
