Do PC's break very easily?

I havent been happy with the performance of my pc lately. Everytime I take it out and use it, it seems as if I could of done a better job by hand. Well I started paying attention to the pads and noticed that they were not spinning, it seems to just vibrate and shake back and forth rapidly. If I pull it off a surface it will start to spin but once I put it on, the weight of the PC alone will make the pad stop. Also on low speeds it makes a slight grinding noise. Anybody have theres break on them? I wonder how much this is going to cost to fix :(
 
Are you sure its broken? It doesn't really spin when in contact with the car but oscillates, mimicing hand motion.
 
Actual failures/problems with the PC generally take two forms- 1) the innards of the PC start to wear and it makes nasty rattling/metal-on-metal sounds, what most people call "bearing failure" though I'm not sure it has anything to do with bearings and/or 2) catastrophic failure where it just doesn't run; from bad switches to a burned-out motor, the machine is just dead.



Note that Mike Phillips has said that Meguiar's has a small mountain of dead PCs that have been replaced under warranty, but then they sell a lot of them.



I've had one rebuilt over the "bearing noise" issue, forget what it cost but it wasn't much (~$75 or so).



The way your PC goes from "true D/A motions" to "merely jiggling" under pressure sounds typical and usual/normal. Try a small backing plate and 4" pads, the lower weight of the smaller plate/pad will allow you to apply more pressure while maintaining more of the dual-action motions.
 
What speed are you using to polish out defects? How quickly are you moving the machine across the paint?



Sounds like the machine is working fine but technique is very important to get the most out of it.
 
Sounds like you're using too low of a setting or improper technique.



Then again, the motor could be weak and you're not seeing full torque.



I got caught in a short rainshower one time and my PC barely got wet. The on/off switch corroded instantly, but was replaced under warranty.
 
I don't know if my PC is representative but I've owned it for 11 years now and it still is a strong as ever.
 
Funny that this topic came up. I've been having intermittent problems with the switch and today the machine decided that it will only run upside down. Yeah, that's useful... :doh

Back to Lowe's I go...as soon as I find that reciept. :shocked
