Do I want a silver/gold car?

Hi,

I currently have a black car, which i love. It looks so good when I've finished working on it. I think a nice-detailed black car look the absolute best.

However, I now have to change my car, due to a new arrival in the next few weeks. My wife works for a car dealer and they have two cars which I'm interested in as i can get them for an unbelievably low price. BUT they are silver or gold.

Now, can silver and gold cars look good when they've been detailed. Can they ever have that pop and depth that we always talk about here.

Please can you help convince me that I'll get the same amount of satisfaction from details gold/silver as I do black. Please, please, please. :)

Why couldn't they have had black or even red?

Thanks,

Face

Gotta admit I just don't like gold colored cars.

But silver, yeah you can make it look special. I used to say I'd never own anything but black, but now it's more like I'll never own anything but silver :D

Yes, you can make silver look really "wow". It's not the same as black or red, but it's *very* easy to keep silver at showcar-level year-round. IMO the biggest trick to keeping them truly extraordinary is to *not* have any marring. Even stuff that doesn't really jump out at you will deteract from the look just enough to make a difference to people like us. Also, I've owned silver vehicles for years now, but I've *never* seen anything like my current combo of 1Z (pro) MP topped with 4* UPP. It's dazzling, literally blinding in bright sunlight but it still has depth. People walking by the S8 stop and stare at it.

And it's nice to have a life. I never knew how much (too much)time I was spending on black/red cars until I got silver ones. I only keep one (well, sorta two) of our silver vehicles truly perfect, but virtually nobody except me can tell any difference between those and my other vehicles. To most people, a decently cared for silver vehicle looks flawless even if you don't kill yourself on it. Might be good given the upcoming arrival ;)

Gold cars have never impressed me. A black and a Silver car both inhabit our garage. As you know, black looks fabulous when it is clean, but a disaster when it isn't spotless. Silver can look really good but IMHO can't give you the look that black can. In defence of silver, it is a very forgiving colour. And it takes a lot to make it look dirty to everybody but you. I'd vote for the silver car.

I have a silver car and love what it l;ooks like after a good etail, i think it's more about the process you use as well as the products in that process. I surrently found this to work very well on silver!

-NXT Wash

-Clay (wolfgang)

-SSR1 or (

-SSR2 if really swirled, if it's new prolly just SSR1)

-AIO

-SG

-NXT Tech Wax (applied very very gently or else it can remove the SG)

Makes Silver look amazing, i would post pics of my car but the last time i did my car it was cloudy and it really doesn't show how amazing it looked but next time i do it i will def post pictures!

I don't like gold, at all. But silver, I absolutely love. Its what I want for my next vehicle, honestly. I think you can make silver look good:

Silver can pop, but it is a different pop that a dark color. I'd take silver over gold hands down...you can do a lot more with it.

As other's have mentioned it is much more forgiving...you can still make it look good and it will seldom look bad. I typically have someone in a parking lot ask me every week or two about what I use on my car.

You did not mention what brand of car; IMHO Germany has the best silver paint however my Toyota is very nice.

If you like you can click on the link below to see some pics on my Cardomain page.

To me, Silver is boring. I have a silver wrx wagon, and I woud kill for a black one. My other car is white, and our beater is a champagne gold. Gold is the worst, very boring and cheap looking (my opinion, of course). I don't find silver to pop much, my car shines better than any I have seen in person with 3 coats of sg, but it still is not that exciting. Also, no one else's pictures here have been that impressive. You notice, they all say "silver can pop" because they are defensive about its looks. They are grabbing at straws. Flame on, but you don't see any black or red cars saying "see, black can pop". Why, because it is obvious it pops. Someday I will have a bad to the bone Chrysler 300C (check out other thread) or a Dodge Magnum in black or red. With the Magnum I can get the deep tint windows.

I don't like gold cars at all. I love silver though. I found EX-P and Paste Glaz to work very well on my neighbor's silver Sonata.

White is also hard to get looking great, but it can be done. With the right products and the right process, you WILL acheive awesome results.

I just cant get the same satisfaction out of cleaning my dads Silver car. Always looks good after just a wash, but cant get the same depth as i can with other colours. Ive got a good deal on a Renault 182 from my local dealer if i go for it im getting a black one.

After owning black, dark blue, red, silver, white, and even gold, I can say that nothing pops like dark colors. Unfortunately a day or two after detailing they start to loose that pop. Dust shows immediately on dark colors. Red is better, but not a lot better, in that regard. Owning a black, red or other dark color in the snow belt is a joke unless you put it in storage for the winter. They constantly look like crap with the salt and crud. Silver, white, gold, all the lighter colors handle some dust and dirt without looking like crap. The light colors look good when detailed but never pop like the darker colors. It's a harsh trade off. How much time are you willing to spend keeping your car looking it's best? How bad do you feel when you have to drive your car when it looks like crap? Do you avoid going places when its raining or snowing because your black car will get ugly and require another time consuming detail?

I now own a red garage queen and a savannah metallic every day driver. I can cope.:D

My wife's car is silver, and I like it. It doesn't look as good as my own midnight blue car. But it still looks very good. And it's parked outside, which makes the silver color a real advantage.

One thing that you might want to consider is a wax with a great deal of depth. Everyone says that dark cars need depth, light cars need reflectivity, but I think a deep shine is even MORE impressive on silver. All black cars look deep, but if you can get a silver car to look deep (it's hard to do, but possible...) - WOW! It looks incredible.

My 172 is up for sale very cheap if you're interested. Pretty mint condition, only 7,500 miles, 02 plate :)

I've gone for the silver car in the end. It's got no oomph, no street-cred and handles like a cargo ship :(

BUT it is very, very cheap and newer than my current car and the payments will be about £120 a month cheap :)

Cheers for all the advice - I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Face

My last car was a silver metallic. I would have gotten the same color again, but it was not available in the model I wanted so I ended up with a Light Bronzemist Metallic. Here's a link to the photo (Warning: It is BIG)

I am a silver kinda guy. Will they ever show the depth of a dark color...no way...but with the right product combo's they can have a very unique look. As others have also said...it is a very forgiving color. :D

"Flame on, Beavis" :D

[Beavis voice] Heh heh, uh... OK.. [/Beavis voice]

I used KSG on my silver WRX and I'll agree that it didn't (IMO) look very good. BOOOORING. I felt the same way with SG on Audi silver and I *still* think so on our MPV (use it for the durability). I'm telling you, you just gotta try different stuff. The way our two Audis and my friend's silver A6 all look like different paints *depending on what I use on them* has taught me that on some shades of silver the product choice is just crucial. FWIW, I've *never* seen a silver Audi that has the "pop" (and that's the word for it) of my S8. I sincerely doubt I could capture it in an internet photo, but in person it's incredible. First time I've achieved such a look and I've had maybe 8 silver Audis with that same paint (and I dunno how many other silver cars).

I have to add support for the silver cars.

I have had two silver 3-series BMW's including the one I have currently - my wife has a silver Audi A2 (the aluminium one!). Both look amazing after they have been properly detailed. At the moment I am getting great results with Autoglym SRP topped with multiple coats of Autoglym Extra Gloss Resin.
