heres basically what i did, about 2 weeks ago, i washed with gold class, clayed with mothers clay bar, SMR for light colored cars 1 coat, and 1 coat of PPCL.

my question is do i really need to wash with dawn now before i use zaino? i feel like if i use dawn, it will wash away all my hard work of putting on the ppcl and the SMR. not to mention the absoultley amazing smoothness and clearness of my paint after i use these 2 products together.

i did this two weeks ago and planned to zaino it right afterwards. the thing is i only see my car on the weekends now and for the past 2 weekends ive been to busy to do it. i have a pretty good car cover on it all the time while im gone plus its parked in a closed garage that rarely opens up. im still gona plan to wash my car prior to zaino to get any tiny dust i may have on there. but do should i use dawn? maybe a tiny bit so it went remove the SMR and PPCL? if not im just going to rise with water before i start zainoing

No, washing with Dawn won't remove all your hard work because the 3M SMR and PPCL results are permanents unless you swirl the car again, or it gets oxidation. It's not like a wax.

I would just wash the car with regular car wash to remove any oils the two products may have left behind.

you couldnt do it right over that....the only thing i would do is not just rinse with water but wash the whole car again...with the gold class or PPCL...so its as clean as possible for the zaino which shows all your "flaws"....i think the dawn is mostly to get all the prior waxings off...whether it be from the dealer/yourself...

You must dawn to remove the oil from the SMR and PPCL , it in a must. Zaino needs to bond correctly , you can't paint a car coverd in oil.

I talked to Sal about this and he says that just washing with Z-7 would be enough to remove whatever SMR left behind. Not disagreeing with you Andre... just stating what I heard from another person. You could be absolutely right for all I know......I haven't tried either product yet.

Luder, maybe you should do a light Dawn wash just to be safe and then wash again with Z-7 if Dawn leaves any kind of residue.

I don't doubt Sal. His advice is good and he is sincere. I would go with Intermezzos recommendation, however, just to be on the safe side.

A Dawn wash is very little work . . . hauling out all the buckets, towels, drying the car, doing a Z7 wash, etc. is going to happen anyway.

BW's comments are, of course, correct as they always are. The good from the SMR and PPCL are in the smooth surface, not in any coating of SMR or PPCL, so you do not have to be worried about removing the SMR or PPCL -- well, actually, you do! You want any trace of them gone.

I am sure BW and others are correct when they say you don't have to Dawn wash. But, just to be safe, I would do the Dawn wash for sure if you have driven the car, and, if it was me, I would do it anyway, just because it is so little work -- what, 5-10 minutes? Be sure to rinse, and then Z7 afterwards, because I have found that the Dawn can leave a film, as Inter notes. Sal concurs.

thought i would see the word illustrious here to decribe a person...:D ...i changed my mind....do the dawn...when there's a little disagreement on the board...go the safe way...maybe i got the wrong vibe...but when Ng said...ill rinse with water and go right to the Zano i figured he didnt want to start with Z7(as some people just buy the Z1,2,5, and use their own car wash)after reading the posts......i dont think im so worried about the PPCL...but the 3m stuff does have alot of oil....so the ambassador...the illustrious...are kinda all right......see how i can change my mind a little....:)

ps...wrote Sal a little email...weird....he said now to use the dawn...

"Just a quickie Sal….if I had used 3M swirl mark remover…then used pinnacles paint cleansing lotion about 2 wks ago….can I just wash with Z7 now and start Zainoing…or do I need a Dawn wash to get rid of any oils from the Swirl remover and PPCL…thx buddy….cant wait for ZFX"

"3M has a lot of oil... I would use the Dawn..."

and told him about intermezzos anaswer and the one he gave me...here's his repsonse...

Z-7 is sufficient in most cases to remove any oils left from 3M SMR.... but I've found that every scenario is different, so sometimes it is better to be safe and use the Dawn wash just as insurance...

makes sense...:)

thanks for all the replies, i dont have Z7, only gold class.

im planning to wash my car with a little bit of dawn before my zaino appliations. ive kept my car for these past 2-3 weeks indoors awith a car cover AND not driven even once. so its not that dirty which a bit of dawn and light washing would bring it back to waxing condition

to be sure. to get all the dawn off after your wash....maybe im a nutcase but i would worry that any dawn that stayed on there would effect the bonding of the zaino....im just paranoid....listen...i know it sucks....i washed my car to the hilt the other nite preparing to Z5 the next day.....then it rained and i had to wash the thing all over again....i just wanted to be as sure as i could be that the paint was clean when i apply stuff to it...especially zaino....have fun dood!!!!!!:)

jeeez people, can't someone just make a "auto dawn"!

Can't someone make a SINGLE wash that does what dawn does but is "safer" for the car that doesn't leave a film.

I mean how hard could it be? development, people, development!!!! :p

use SMR and then use Auto Dawn, use clay and then use Auto Dawn, before you Zaino or Klasse use Auto Dawn, after you PPCL use Auto Dawn, go do it, make it! okay now i'm on a mission! :D

to see steve for the next 7 days....as he goes on a mission of invention.....will he emerge victorious....find out next week....same Autopian channel....same Autopian time)chatroom MWF...930-1030pm)....this could be the one that breaks him....let us pray for him!!!:D

Steve here is a start:

Take 1 part Dawn + 1 part Gold Class. Mix up and down not in circles either to prevent inparting swirls in new formula. Let foam subside insert in your foamer thingy and wash away! LOL

This board is just so nice to newbies.....

Now I regret that I did the reverse when I Zaino the first time:

- Z7 wash the day before

- Dawn wash again next morning(@7:30AM)

- Z1/Z2(x4 now)

If there was some trace of the film left by Dawn I could very much have sealed it in underneath the Z2 8-(

But I do plan to reapply Z1 again after 5 coats of Z2. Does it make sense to Dawn wash again before another Z1+Z2?? Dumb question but had to ask.

gti, what you did might have been a good idea too, because I find Z-7 to have good lubrication, whereas Dawn doesn't. The extra lubrication might have helped reduce swirl marks while washing.

Plus, I find Z-1 to have some chemical cleaner that removes some dots, and maybe the Dawn film too!
