DIY Quick Detailer?

I read somewhere that QDs are practically 95% water. That statement may be questionable, but some people have mentioned it.

I also read somewhere that people mix some Klasse SG with water in a spray bottle, and use that as their QD?

That would be fine if you use Klasse, I guess. But what if you use a carnauba?

Is there a way one can mix some ingredients with water to make a cheap QD? Where I'm from, things get quite expensive because shipping (heavy) liquids to the Philippines takes its toll... the distributor/importer of Meguiar's, for example, sells #34 Final Inspection for US$10 for the spray bottle... and about US$30 for a gallon.

Or, even if it is a little less effective than using it in pure mode, would this be possible: mix 25% distilled water with 75% Final Inspection... that way, I effectively add 25% more to my stock.

Do a search, there was some threads about a year ago on folk making up there own QD, I cannot remember any of the details though.

you may want to get in touch with "theveed" - he's a member here who is also from the phillipines (I think manilla), he may have some sources for some cheaper stuff or advice for things that work to bring costs down. :xyxthumbs

I think every QD is mostly water; 95% sounds plausible. The basic ingredients of QD are water, alcohol, silicone emulsion, and some kind of wax or polymer to add a little protection. Typically the most expensive thing in a bottle of QD is the spray head.

Can you make your own QD? Yeah, I guess. But I like your watered down idea better. Play with mixtures to see which work best. I'd imagine a 50/50 mix would be OK for most needs.

First post... yeah... heheh... but been lurking for quite a while now. And yes, I do know "theveed", but I'll try the 50/50 solution.

I'll do a search on DIY QDs (dunno why I didn't do that in the first place). :)

Good luck Alf, one of the things that separates using proper QD and putting some liquid wax in water is QD's lubrication properties, which wax isn't designed to do. I think I read the 95% water thing on a MSDS of 3M's QD, which incidentally also showed that it was only about 1% alcohol.

I've found diluted QD to still be pretty slippery, but I can't tell what ratio this was in since I was doing it while claying.
