DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

when the boom is extended all the way out. the stand is a bit wobbly but I feel with some weight at the bottom it wouldn't move anywhere

Get some ankle weights! I've almost knocked over my stand a few times and the ankle weights have saved me.

updated my light, i think this is the final piece for it.

found a tripod dolly for $25 bucks off newegg Dolica LT-D100 Professional Tripod Dolly - Newegg.com

Pros on dolly
easy to move around
makes the stand less wobbly when its high or hovering over a hood/trunk

Cons
footprint is larger then just the stand by itself
it brought the regular height of it up some (see pics), this wasnt an issue on a truck. will test it on a car tomorrow
height was brought up for 2 reason, the wheels+dolly frame, 2nd reason. the tripod feet had to be push together more to fit into the slide lock of the tripod dolly frame

How does the light stay at an angle like if you were doing the hood or angling for the roof, does it need a counter weight like other stands?

How would using 1 bulb instead of 2 work in that situation?

when i positioned it over the hood as you see in the pic, it felt very weighted, did not sway or feel like it was topping over. the weight of the dolly holds it down perfectly.

my original plan was to put down the dolly and add a few strap ankle weights to the "counter" leg in case it topped over but i dont think ill need that anymore

1 bulb should work fine if you feel that is all you need

put this video together for reddit cause i get asked quite a bit about the light stand set up. ill put the video here for anyone else in the future

Don -

Thank you so much !

Very well done, I totally loved seeing the lamp and tripod at all the different stages you put it through...
Learned a lot...

Love your beautiful, very nice room quality garage ! looks like you also have 8 - 10 foot ceilings - very nice !

Your boy is really cute !

Thanks again ! Texas rules ! :)

Thank you! I was considering purchasing some LED work lights from the hardware store for about $100. I hadn`t even thought about the importance of the color temperature. I am a drummer and have several cymbal boom stands laying around. I suspect that base will easily fit on the end of one. All I need to do is buy the bulbs and base, for around $40 and I`m set.
