DIY formulas, esp. washer fluid

Did a search and couldn't find a thread I thought I remembered on DIY formulas for car care and detailing. In particular, I'm interested in good and safe formulas for windshield washer fluid.

Okay, no posts back on this, so I went out to the Net to do some research. Didn't find anything that seemed great, except these formulas for cleaning vinyl records from Steve Rochlin's great site, Enjoy the Music. I don't like the idea of strongly alcoholic fluids, which could remove my Z , but I think these have potential, and they cost pennies to the gallon versus the commercial stuff of unknown content.



distilled water alcohol detergent

------------------------------------------------------------------

1) 1 part 1 part isopropyl none

2) 1 part 1 part isopropyl a drop of Triton X-100

3) 1 quart 1 pint denatured 10 drops Photoflo

4) 3 parts 1 part a few drops

5) 3 parts 1 part rubbing a few drops

6) 4 parts 1 part ethanol some

Interestingly enough, just last night I stumbled across this telethon for a Detroit PBS of all things. They had this guy on the show, Haley, and he showed all sorts of neat things like making a silver tarnish remover solution, using a vacuum for compressing pillows (good for luggage too, he failed to mention), using ammonia to clean stuff, etc. One thing interesting I saw was a home made carpet cleaner that went something like:



3 tbs dish detergent

1 tbs vinegar

<1 tbs ammonia

3/4 cup water



He then mixed this stuff up and put it in a pump foamer (for soaps and stuff) and used it to clean up a pretty brown looking carpet. He said it was important to just use the foam and not the liquid. Impressive, but then what do I do with all the carpet/upholstery cleaner I already bought?



He also mentioned something about not washing non-greasy stains in warm/hot water because it causes them to take a set. I didn't know that before....
