Difficulty with SSR2.5

Well, today I used SSR 2.5. Prepped the car and pad correctly. The problem was the SSR 2.5 started dusting IMMEDIATELY when I turned the PC on. I went from speed 3 working it in, to speed 5. It dusted all the way from the beginning and didn't seem to have a long working time, didnt seem to take out my minor scratches either? Also, I was using an orange cutting pad from Tropi-Care. The pad did seem a bit soft, so maybe the pad just wasn't aggressive enough? Maybe I should bump it up to the yellow pad? What pads has everyone had luck with w/ SSR 2.5?

I was doing this outside, so my car was hot to the touch which I think is a contributing factor. I've seen the swirls SSR 2.5 can take care of, and it should of taken care of most of mine..but didn't.

Any input on this??

On a happier note, OCW is wonderful. Very easy product to use with perfect results.

you are experiencing a very common gripe with the poorboy's line. i've never had good results with any ssr's. they all dust like mad for me and tend to hide swirls, just do an IPA wipe down after you think you're done...hence my decision to not use their polishes. if you're determined to use your stock of ssr2.5, try using less product and working out of direct sunlight. even though poorboy's claim to be sun friendly, you might as well eliminate any factors that may cause flashing of the product.

Hey, I noticed your from Cambridge, I am from Canton just right down the road. Any chance of you swinging down this way one day? Lunch will be on me :2thumbs:

Once you have a primed pad, the SSR's generally have a nice working time and relatively minimal dusting.

IF you don't work them long enough, they do tend to hide unremoved swirls a bit, which means you need to work it a bit longer.

Also, though they say that you can use them in the sun, they still do best in partial shade/cool surface conditions. Working on a hot surface and/or using too much product will yeild to the excessive dusting and unsatisfactory work time, thus, bringing dissatisfaction in its swirl removing capacity.

Anything I've used in the sun (including "dustless" waxes) always dust for me when I'm in the sun. Therefore I don't work in the sun at all. If the product says it can be used in the sun, it is neither a deterrant or attractant for me to buy their product - I simply don't care because I personally don't think I should be doing any paint work in the sun.

I did do a quick "show" for my friend on his front fender. I used SSR 2.5 and 1, and they immediately caked up and dusted in the sun.

When in the garage and working on a cool surface, SSR is great!

would Optmium Compound be a good replacement for SSR2.5 since it doesnt dust?

I'm not entirely sure on how the two compare, but from what I've read, it seems that SSR2.5 is a lot more abrasive than OC. I'm guessing that even OCH is not as abrasive as SSR2.5.

However, Optimum polishes are extremely easy to work with, with zero dusting.

Your absolutely correct about the heat of the car and polish breaking down. It kinda makes you want to question the detailers that say, they polish in 95 deg direct sunlight LOL ............ I do !!!

There's always a bit of dusting with polish no matter what brand but often excessive dusting from 2.5 is the result of using too much product or not loading the pad evenly. I've been using SSR2.5 with Lake Country pads and have never had a problem. Results are just terrific in fact.

I used the SSr2.0 recently and I had the opposite problem, I couldnt seem to get the product to dust at all. It smeared when I tried to remove it no matter how long I seemed to work it.

Strange, perhaps I was using to much product. But I prepped the pad with a circle about 1 inch from the edges, and followed up the rest of the polishing with about 2-3 dot sized pea's of 2.5.

Im really thinking the paint was to hot to do any type of correction.

Whats the best pad to use SSR 2.5 with? I want something a little more heavy cut than Tropi-Care orange cutting pad.

Im going to try your method of product usage next time. Try the Sonus yellow or the LC yellow pad next time. Whats your opinion on the SSR 3.0. Was thinking about getting some of that or some Optimum Hyper compound.

Nice avatar by the way!!

Thanks, I haven't tried the 3.0, or OHC. I know a few people that use the OHC with the PC and love it.

Who sells the Sonus yellow pads? I think I might try to Meguiars Burgundy pad, and finish up with OP and the Meguiars yellow pad.

Thanks, anakin is badazz :2thumbs:

That's what I did too, but continued to do that process for the entire car.
