Difference in polishers

I've tried looking through the knowledge articles and searching this forum trying to find the difference in polisher types but can't really find the information I'm looking for. Could someone point me in the right direction, please?



I'm trying to find out what sets the PC out so far ahead of the competition and if there are any cheaper "entry-level" alternatives. What makes the PC better than the 10" polisher/buffer from Sears? Or the 6" sander/polisher from Sears that looks kind of like the PC?

That 10" thing is ok to apply wax with but does not have the power to remove

defects in paint!



I am not sure about the 6" sander/polisher from Sears

but I would think the same problem and I assume it has a fixed backing plate

so if it is even hook & loop you are stuck with one size pad



the pc has a a backing plate system the you can use all kinds of pads & brushes with



I am sure there are some entry-level sander/polisher that would work ok but

not to the level of the pc



trust me, the pc's price will seem small when you add up all the other thing you will buy to go with it
 
what is the price of the 6'' polisher at sears.



you can buy the PC new in box at lowes hardware for 110$





a polisher isnt worth buying unless you can change the backing plate system.



chances are the polisher you see at sears is a sander, and has a dust port on tha back of it for a bag to catch sanding dust, and less space between the fixed backing plate and the unit
 
The Porter Cable is so popular because it is so user friendly. You can be a beginner and get awesome results. You also don't really have to worry about burning up the paint. Be careful using the 4 inch pads because they create more heat. 6.5 inch pads are the most common pads used with the pc. You can use either a 5 or 6 inch backing plate to work with them.



You will have to get a backing plate to accomodate the pads. The backing plate will have velcro and the pads go on and off real easy.
 
The Sears one does not have enough power to do any paint correction. That only thing I would use that for is applying sealants or waxes.
 
Ok, thanks for all the responses fellas. I guess if I can get a PC at Lowe's for $110, then I'll just go ahead and do it right the first time.



Of course first I have to fix the windows that some crackhead busted out of my wife's Tahoe an hour ago...
 
Yeah Lowes has good deals on them. It will be the 7337 model though. It just has a different sized counterweight.
