DF Concours Magic Cube Review

I got to play with the super squishable Magic Cube today from DF Towel. Considered to be a possible substitute of sorts for clay, this sponge like cube is very interesting.

My results are that it did a good job of removing tree sap and mino dirt from my trunk lid when used with Z-6. It had a smoothing effect like clay although I'm not sure it can pick up as much as clay can. Further testing is needed. Still it seems to be an effective product for light claying duties and I really like how it instantly molds to your hand.

I also received thre new DF Towels in white in different sizes. I had an old DF CBT from Autopia that I had forgotten about and I pulled it out for comparison. There seems to have been some improvement in the quality of the edging and the material is a bright white cotton compared with a greyish green cotton, er AlpineFiber.

Maybe Leo can explain if there have been any differences. The new towels are a bit stiff but I'm sure they will soften up over time with several washings. They seem very well made.
 
Interresting. What is the purpose of the CUBE? It is strictly to remove small stains or what exactly?

It's to replace clay for light duty work I believe. It's like a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser but has bigger pores...
 
Wow, it almost looks like a sponge of sorts, yet it acts like a fine grade clay? Did it make the trunk smoother than it was before?
 
I have something like that for removing bugs and stuff on the bumpers...I use it while washing with bug squash

It's not a bug sponge but rather seems to be a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser type product and material for paint. It's rather unique. I haven't seen another product like it for paint.

I like the idea it could be molded to the contour of the surface to get into emblems and such. Sort of like a Tempur-pedic pillow for the car!
 
It looks really interesting. I hate it when I get too close to some textured rubber moldings and get clay stuck in there. If this removes the contaniments then that would be a real time saver for me. I know its still early on but I wonder how long they last.
 
Ok i have a question about it. With clay it gets dirty as you use it you fold it over and kneed it into itself Yada Yada Yada. So how to you keep from damaging the paint surface with the cube since it appears that you can not kneed it like clay? Where are the contaminants going into the Cube? Is the cube disappearing as you use it?

O and what is the bug sponge someone refered to? A link?

I would think that the contaminants would either go in the pores or sit on the surface. Obviously you can't fold like clay but you can wash it so I would have a bucket of soap and water with me and wash the cube as needed. I will have to get one and try it out. Looks like it would be a good replacement for spot claying. I do this almost every wash or two especially the rear bumper.

The cube sounds to me to be a great maintanance tool prior to a once or twice a year claying..
 
I think you guys are being unfair and off base here. This is no bug sponge at all. Earlier I said "It's like a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser but has bigger pores."

It is very soft and squishy whereas a bug sponge is stiff and brittle. This is a different animal that can handle claying type work.

The cube has 6 surfaces that you rotate through as contaminants are being picked up...you then wash and repeat. If you get too much dirt you cut the cube back on the dirty side by a quarter inch with a sharp knife.
 
Six surfaces, eh? Sounds mysteriously like a cube.

You used it with Z-6? So it needs a lubricant? How was panel wiping afterward? If those are the same as clay, but doesn't go as far, it seems to me no better.

Just wondering.

I think it was taken slightly off topic due to it resembeling the bug sponge, I don't think that anyone was implying that they are the same thing.

Back to the subject, when you say wash and repeat are you referring to rinsing out in your wash bucket to remove the contaminents and continue on.

Also do you think that it is removing any of your LSP.

Yep, my bad. I see now 97F150 was refering to the Pinnacle Bug Sponge referenced above. I feel it is misleading to some to discuss the two in the same thread. The composition is entirely new. This is a wholly different deal.

By washing I meant you can throw it into the washer after using. It does not appear to be removing any of my LSP. I looked at the surface of the trunk lid under strong light last night and I did not see any micro-marring.

The cube costs $6.80.
 
Sorry did not mean to mislead or get off topic. I just had never heard of a big sponge and was curious what it was.
