DeWalt 849 died

Although the DeWalt is know for it reliability, i think i may have killed one.

First off, i bough the thing used for i think $20 off a Craigslist at the start of the summer this year. It had been used in a body shop so it is a little rough around the edges, not broken though. It ran a bit rough so i took it apart, cleaned it, changed the grease, and put in new brushes and holders. It ran better after that, but you could still tel it had some years on it.

Fast forward. I have done about 6 cars total with it and i was working on one of mine last night and the machine started to slow and run rough. The left side brush was sparking like crazy and getting real hot. I put it down and have not used it since.

The question it, should i try to fix it, or get a new one?

My guess is that it is going to need more than new brushes this time, but i still have not idea, it might be a an easy fix.

check the comm on the motor (the thing the brushes touch) make sure it is not U shaped. If it is, you may just need to take it to a shop to have the comm trued (RC car racers used to do this to keep the motor in tip top shape.) Unfortunately though, this could also be a sign that there is no comm left on the motor so it is actually hitting the center shaft. (This ideology is based on the similarity of power tool motors to RC car motors, so it may be slightly off.)

it cant be dead! its a Dewalt!

That is what i thought. It still truns fine under no load, but once you get it on paint, it really suffers.
