I wana detail my engin. But i seriously afraid i will damage the eletrical system or get water in some parts. I know to wrap the eletrical prats with bagies. But i am still afriad i will hurt my engin. Would you guy please help me over come this fear.

Hi Iowan_Juggalo,

The only way you can hurt your engine is if your car got stuck in a flood with water up to the top of your hood. By just rinsing water on your engine compartment with of course electrical components nicely protected as you mentioned, I don't think you have anything to worry about. When you turn your engine back on, the heat generated from your engine should evaporate any moisture.

What about not spraying, but wiping down w/rags?? I am waaayyy too paranoid about getting water in places that it shouldn't be!!

Hi Dave C.,

Wiping down with rags is fine also. It will just take you a little longer but you will get there. If your going to get that close to the knick and crany's of your engine department, I would recommend wearing a heavy duty glove. You wouldn't want to cut yourself while scrubbing the grease and dirt off your engine. Good luck.

don't worry if you car doesn't turn over your first attempt or two, you may need to let it sit in the sun for an hour or two to get the water out before it will start if water does get in somewhere.

are you planning on using an engine cleaner? some guys just steam their engine which requces teh amount of water that can get somewhere nasty.

What about the degreaser you're using? Is anyone else concerned about a degreaser washing down into somewhere it shouldn't be (unsealed bearings, etc) and attacking lubricants?

I'm still afraid to take a hose to my engine, and going part by part with rags is slow going. I suppose it's the tradeoff for the peace of mind, but the job will never be as good as it would if it was done the wet way.

although I've never tried it, they have that meguiars extra stuff, it looked pretty convincing in the video. you could put that stuff on and rather than using the whole hose to spray it off, you can use a strong sprayer bottle for better control.

As long as you protect electrical items there should be no problem. If you think about all the horrible stuff that gets thrown around the engine bay whilst driving, some cleaner is not going to hurt anything.

I've been a car lover for years and have much more experience with the mechanical aspects of vehicles than the paint (although I an quickly learning-Thanks Autopia!) and have cleaned many engines. My advice is to spray the engine down with some type of degreaser such as simple green and use your head when washing. Make sure the engine is cool when you spray on the cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes then rinse using moderate water pressure. You normally don't even have to cover electrical parts, just use your head and don't flood everything! I have cleaned all types of engines this way, from stock, distributor motors to blown, crank triggered racing engines and have never had a problem. Goodd luck and don't fear the powerplant!!:up
