Detailing Websites and Their Iconic Waxes

As the original author of the article, I must state that I object to the gratuitous and unfortunate attacks upon Detailing Bliss. I was explicit in my introduction that I did not want my piece to become a launching pad for attacks upon any site or any product. I wrote it in a spirit of fun. If we can't enjoy a bit of teasing about our detailing zeal, preferences, and practices, then we are taking ourselves far too seriously.

The folks at DB have been very gracious to me. In fact, shortly after I introduced myself to the folks at DB, I received in the mail an unsolicited and generous gift from a DB member of three different waxes for me to try out on my car, including a sample of a very expensive high-end wax. It was totally unexpected. I do not know why I was chosen to be a beneficiary of this gentleman's generosity, but I am very grateful.

I do not possess sufficient knowledge and experience to know whether the amount of misinformation is proportionately higher at Detailing Bliss as opposed to any other detailing site. I read a lot of b.s. at every site. For myself, I distrust most everything I read on the internet. The more an individual pontificates on a particular subject, the more quickly I dismiss him. I want credentials, substantiation, and sources for dogmatically-asserted knowledge-claims; in the absence of such, it's all just opinion. And as a jazz musician once quipped, "Opinions are like ***-holes. Everyone has one."

What I do know is that the virtues I most respect in others are civility, kindness, patience, generosity, and modesty. It also helps to have a healthy, self-deprecating sense of humor. I abhor flame wars, though I have, to my regret and shame, participated in more than a few during the past decade. Because of the absence in the internet of normal restraining social bonds, it is all too easy to say things about and to others that we would never say in face-to-face conversation. When we indulge this freedom to abuse, we diminish ourselves.

Respectfully,

Al

Here here. I stated on Detailing Bliss I could not find a tire dressing I liked. Low and behold, on Saturday I'm helping a friend detail a car (Got Leather) in the garage and the post office lady walks up and hands me a box. Inside was about 6 samples of tire dressing AND a sample of Souveran. And yes he is from Detailing Bliss. :thx

^ +1

to each their own. as with anything else out there, some people will automatically look at more expensive=better. thought many folks here knows thats not true, it is still often looked at better detailers use expensive products.

personally, i like reading the articles on "how and why" more than "here r pics." learning about paint, sealants, waxes, polishes, mf towels, etc, etc helps me truly become better with vehicles more than spending more money does.

btw...alcohol wipe-downs are basically a must, but why the 50/50 mix? why not use the highest % possible? (i've been looking for an answer to this for some time)

Very entertaining read~!

Yeah, +2. I do think some detailing sites have their favorite pet products...around here it was once 3M IHG topped with Blitz, back before 100% correction and IPA wipedowns became the order of the day.

I wouldn't say that alcohol wipedowns are a must (I hardly ever do them), but I can't imagine any reason to use a weak(er) dilution other than saving money. When I *do* use IPA, I use one of the stronger concentrations (forget the %) right as it comes from the bottle :nixweiss

akimel, beautifully written, insightful, very witty (Oscar Wilde would approve), with delicious irony.

You should become a writer! ;)

Hah! Great thread. I remember a few years ago the rage was also RMG topped with UPP on white cars! I couldn't wait to get my bank account wrapped around a new white car....and when I did, i couldn't remember why.

Anyone remember FK425? That was hotter'n the new Domino's Subs that beat Subway.

And yes, I bought them all.....including the Domino's Sub.

Fun thread.

I'd like to think that I have made this community WIDE OPEN to all brands (okay... all reputable brands) of wax.

Over the years, we have seem many brands run their course. The nice thing is, there are a lot of great products out there, and Autopians are willing to try them all.

Hi, I'm JuneBug and I'm a wax-a-holic, seriously - I think over the years I've spent way too much on just so-so products that i end up selling, trading or using for skeet! But, it's legal, and cheaper than fast cars and hookers and keeps me looking forward to some day finding the holy can of wax.

Amen! You're the Scully & Mulder of the enthusiast world trying to find the eternal LSP. Longest lasting, tightest beading, best smelling, easiest applying best looking and cheapest product that will satisfy the apatite of the hungriest of clearcoats.

Thanks for the informative post. I always wondered why so many different favorites on the different sites. Thing is I have most of these products!

I agree. I don't think any one brand monopolizes Autopia. There is a wide range of products that get used by most of the community. There are several brands which have unique products.
