I have been looking for a video that helps me understand how to properly use a high speed buff as well as choose the appropriate pads for the appropriate jobs. The only one I have found so far is the Meguiars one here. Anyone know of a video out there that could help me.

I wish I could help, but instead I'd like to post one extra question: If anyone has viewed the Meguiars video, is it worth it? ie: did it provide some really useful tips and information? I don't mean to get away from 'buffer's' original question, just thought I'd add to it. Thanks
 
I think that buffing is something that you have to learn hands on to truly understand. Just search, read and read and you will know what to expect.
 
I agree that reading is a good way to learn but to get a better grasp of what is involved I like to see how things are done. In getting all the infomation I can I run a better chance of avoiding mistakes.

Hi all,



I'm probably a little biased since I work for Meguiar's.



I wrote the script for the video and was also on set during the shoot, (I'm even in the video, I'm "car wash boy").



That said, there is a ton of information in this video on wet-sanding and machine buffing with a rotary buffer.



We cover a lot of topics in 55 minutes.



There is an excellent section on how-to pick up a bead of product using the rotary buffer to eliminate splattering.



There are also some excellent computer generated graphics that explain how Meguiar's diminishing abrasives work.



I know everybody and their brother sells a diminishing abrasive product "today", but Meguiar's pioneered that technology for use in the automotive industry since their inception. Barry told me since 1901, I have personally seen glass bottles from the 1920’s that use diminishing abrasives.



And if you have ever wondered which product in the 80's series to use and the order in which to use them, this video explains that also. (The 80’ s series equals the Body Shop Professional products)



I started out with 120,000 words and cut it down to 60,000 words.



I don't think you will find a better informational video for $10.00 or less.



And yes, it heavily promotes Meguiar's products, that's because the goal of the video is to show how to use Meguiar's products.



You can get the video from any PBE store, (Paint Body & Equipment), if they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you and have it in about one day.



There is also some comedy in it.



The introduction is really long, that's partially my fault. I wrote it about 6 times, each time adding another tidbit of Meguiar's involvement in the car world.

I can't speak for videos but I can say for literature, you'll find the eBook a more the valuable resource for detailing knowledge, how-to. Besides the first 8 chapters are free. You can find the eBook on the Autopia home page.
 
Worth buying in my opinion. I got the video and have watched it several times. I've been reading about buffing for about a year. I always try and review all the threads on the topic. Read books and reviewed the how too section at CMA. I just needed a visual aid to finish it off and take the plunge and buy a polisher. Awaiting the arrival of a Makita 9227 from CMA. Now I will practice on car hoods that I picked up for free at an autobody shop. Picked up all the black hoods!!!!!



I think you'll like the video.
 
Just a note, the Meguiar's site also has some free clips under "clinincs" or something. I know there is at least one that shows some buffing (I think the wetsanding clinic). They show pulling the product into the buffer. It's free, which seems to be what you are after.
 
Thanks for the heads up on the Meguiars site. Don't get me wrong free is always good but I am willing to pay for something that is worth it (ie. if you guys say it is)

Just found it in another post but thanks for the link. I was just thinking while watching this what a rotary can do that a PC can't. I would assume without reading at this point that a rotary can get out more stubborn problems and let you rebuilt a finish while a PC is a bit more limited in that department due to the loss of heat.

The Random Orbitals can pretty much do everything a rotary can; it just takes longer.



I've removed 2000 grit sandpaper marks before with my RO but it did take some time. It did it though!
 
What kind of paint was it that you removed the #2000 grit sanding marks using an Orbital polisher?



An old acrylic lacquer finish on a 1952 Chevrolet?



Or a basecoat/clearcoat finish on a new car?



The reason I ask is that modern clear coats are "pretty dog-gone hard".

Off-hand I don't know where you can purchase this video in Canada.



I will find out however since I have had a number of voice mails and e-mails for the same request.



I have a phone call into on of our Canadian Reps to find out where you can get a copy.



His voice mail says he is out of the office until Friday, so I post something here as soon as I find out.



If I can’t locate a place for you to purchase a copy… I’ll make it happen on my own.



Currently, I'm writing the script for our next video, which will actually be a DVD for detailing cars using our Professional line.

Hey Mike,



I believe that the Canadian Dist. for Meguiars will begin selling products online very soon. Perhaps the video will then be able to be purchased from them. I have been in contact with the Dist. General Manager :Greg; he is a first class guy to deal with!!



As for the new video, I would suggest looking at the problems/mistakes that people do mostly with the rotary. Perhaps, the solutions to the causes of buffer bounce, how to use on a vertical surface, when to use a cutting pad(severity of swirls etc... .), proper hand control of the buffer, and MOST of all, the correct pattern of use(figure 8 or cross-hatch pattern), and any tricks in obtaining a swirl free finish.



You do realize that if you use my suggestions, I want a copy of the new DVD as a royalty fee!! :D :o
