detailing the roof of your car?

The best and only way to detail all those hard to reach points is by using a 4 to 6 ft step ladder. There is nothing worse than detailing those hard to reach sufaces and having to lean on them and messing up a nice detail job. Of all sufaces the roof is one of the hardest to get to and it takes a lot of abuse. I detail alot of trucks and SUV's and it's really noticable when your driving down the road or passing by someone and you can see they don't really care to clean to top of the vehicle. That is what seperates those who clean there vehicle and those who spray it off.

for "cars" I can get 'em from the ground since I'm 6'1" but trucks/SUVs/Vans I always pray for running boards (like mine has) or I end up grabbing a small-ish ladder.

I have a 4ft wooden step ladder and I use a paint tray, the type that hooks on to the ladder rungs, to hold polishes, waxes, towels and other small detailing tools. Works great and makes quick work when detailing the family van.

Hey I'm the same size and its hard to use a PC with running boars on a SUV. I do think the best solution is the work platform, but it depends on the height of the car. Thoes platforms may not be high enough if your not that tall with short arms and work on something very high like a 4x4 Expedition. The platform work for me on every kind of truck short of a modified 4x4 with a lift and 37", then again I'm just past 6'.

I'm not tall, but my cars are short so I can reach at least half way across the roof. Guess this is a good reason for me not to buy an SUV or truck. I can just imagine falling off a stepladder onto the ground, or worse, onto the car.

Here's a link for a work platform: http://tinyurl.com/42sn6

There are cheaper ones out there, but most have weight ratings of between 200 and 250 lbs. The Bauer platform I linked to has a weight rating of 500 lbs, useful for Cartman-esque detailers like me.

I'm not fat, I'm big boned.

That is a nice platform, but a steep price. I got a nice aluminum folding platform with rubber feet for @ $29 at menards. Really helps out with the Nissan Armada....

I stand on my step rails (nerf bars, whatever you call em) for the front portion, and climb in the bed to do the back 3/4.

with my old truck (had a bed cover) I used an empty upside down 5 gallon bucket. always worked great, and was free.

I'm 6'1 210lbs, bucket always holds up.

This works for me...

I got a short A frame ladder at Wal-Mart. The top step (guessing) is 24 to 34" up. It even has a wide shelf on the opposite side from the steps to place your PC, bottles, towels, etc, on.

It was about $30, and is very sturdy. The steps are wide so at the top, you are standing on a platform..not a skinny step.

It has been a huge help with the Excursion. I can reach all the way to the middle of the roof. Heck, it even has a paper towel roll holder!

In fact....this is it...

I just purchased one of those long platform ladders by Gorilla. I'll try it out in the next couple days. It very light but sturdy. Well see how it works out.
