detailing the roof of your car?

Hey everyone!

For those of you with cars that don't sit low to the ground, how do you go about detailing the roof of your cars?

I already have short arms which makes things kind of difficult and sometimes I don't even feel like polishing the roof, but at the same time I just can't ingore that big a piece of the car, you know?

What do you guys do?

Here's a link for a work platform: http://tinyurl.com/42sn6

There are cheaper ones out there, but most have weight ratings of between 200 and 250 lbs. The Bauer platform I linked to has a weight rating of 500 lbs, useful for Cartman-esque detailers like me.

I'm not fat, I'm big boned.

Tort

A small step ladder (4 ft) for detailing the roofs of the Expedition and Explorer. The up and down is kind of getting old so I am thinking about one of the work platforms.

The platform that Tort linked to :xyxthumbs I have one for each side of the vehicle.

The cheaper ones are a lot smaller, enough so that I wouldn't feel safe on one (and I weigh 175). No way am I gonna compromise on something so directly related to my personal safety; all it takes is one bad fall and your life (as you know it) is over.

two ladders side by each,,, and a couple of 2x4's laid across the second or third step (thus connecting the two ladders) will be the redneck tip of the day!!!

Initially I found it difficult to do the roof of my GX470 which is more than 6' tall. It is one of the tallest SUV but I am short. Then I figured that if I stand on the rear wheels, it works out just fine because I can reach most of the roof. Very stable too.

I always get up on the edge of a seat when I have to do a large roof. My neighbor has a GX470 as well and when I detial for him, I always just put on some clean socks and get up on the seats with the door open. If anyone cares, I'm 5'5' (only 16 so I got some more growth left) and doing this on each sides get the whole roof done...even on a huge Suburban (another neighbor customer)!

For those who stood by the seat or the wheels, don't you have hard time doing some polishing with either the rotary or the PC? It's like your one hand holding the machine and the other holding on to something to maintain balance.

I'm not that tall (5'10) but I'm definitely taller than my Honda CR-V mini SUV. I just can't seem to find any othe way of using the machine to polish the roof without standing on a home made platform.

Standing on the wheels or the seats, made me off-balance when holding a machine...

I stand on the door sill for the cab roof and the tires for the camper shell of my truck. Big tires give me plenty of stability in the back.

I like to use a milk crate! I'm about 220 and it is very good and sturdy. I like to open the door on the side I am working and it gets me in nice and close so I can reach a large area of the roof. It is cheap and very effective! Good for picking up crap when I'm done too!!

Havent found anything that can get me over the top yet...

This is my wife's Dodge. I'll have a full detail report soon .

Now, I am not a short guy (close to 6'3"), but when I was detailing my mom's truck (F-350) I had to stand on half of an inverted whiskey barrel with a tiny step stool on top.

I got it done, but it was a little tipsy, and no, it wasn't because I emptied the whiskey barrel before it was cut in half, so don't ask!
