Detailing Supplies: First Time

Okay, first off, I'm merely gonna wash my car, I'll wax it once the new paint cures. Now, I'm going to Pep Boys to buy a wash mitt and a drying towel - my old stuff is too dirty to even clean - anything in specific I should look for? I'm gonna buy a microfiber wash mitt and a microfiber waffle weave drying towel. Does the brand matter, or as I said before, anything I should look for in the product itself? Thanks!

wash = tile & grout sponge at Lowes...

dry = viking x-large microfiber drying towel at k-mart or kragen... (if you wanted a good quality waffle weave dring towel, i'd order it on-line)

microfiber towels = viking green quick detailing towel and orange edgeless microfiber towel at k-mart or kragen...

So you recommend the grout sponge to wash the car and not a wash mitt?

you can use both, give each a shot and see what works for you. i like the Lowes GS for these reasons (i'm sure there are a few more that i can't think of at the moment LOL)...

1. $1.87 (cheaply priced)

2. soft

3. very maneuverable as you can squeeze and can get into tight spots

4. rinses debris out easily

5. lasts a long time

I just found a brand new Meguiar's Wash Sponge in a Meguiar's kit I had sitting right behind me.

Autopia Review: Wash Mitts & Sponges: Meguiar's Professional Grade Wash Sponge

Should I just use that to wash the car? Is that considered a grout sponge? How long does it last and how do I care for and clean it?

[EDIT]

Also, I plan on using that same sponge to remove the few bugs I have splattered on my freshly painted front bumper. Good or bad idea?

sure, you can use the megs sponge (grout sponges are usually softer than normal traditonal ones). just make sure to monitor that it isn't creating swirls, scratches, marring. when done with it (sometimes i'll soak it in a bucket right after a wash in clean water), and then take the hose to it and squeeze/rub all the debris out and let it air dry...

So I used the sponge I had, and boy was it amazing! I only wish I would of started using a sponge instead of a mitt from the start! I guess that a mitt is better if the car is a lot filthier? At least, that's what I read somewhere. Other than that, I used a waffle weave by that Micro Gear brand, simply because that's the only waffle weave that Pep Boys carries - it also looks just like the Cobra waffle weave - oh man, it's SO much better than a chamois! My old mitt and chamois are DEFINITELY going to my wheels :D. As soon as my paint cures I'm going to buy some wax applicator pads and some wax remover/detailing micro fiber cloths and start waxing away! Also, seeing as how fast it was to wash my car this time, it looks like I'm going to start washing my car once a week (with my old supplies it took double the time to wash my car.)

Now, what's the best way to clean and dry the sponge and waffle weave?

see 3rd sentence in post #7 above... as far as the waffle weave, wash and dry it with your mf towels, and remember not to over use liquid detergent (they're very concentrated these days) when washing, and absolutely do not use any fabric softener/dryer sheets as well...

I guess I must of missed that line heh. I live in an apartment, so since it's not too dirty, can I just throw it in with my clothes?

It's because lint from your cloths gets stuck in the MF. I have mixed MFs and cloths sometimes and couldn't see any lint, but it all depends on the cloths. Get a few more MFs and then wash them together.
