Detailing routine for new Volkswagen

Hi,

I am taking delivery of a new Volkswagen at the beginning of September. It's going to be metallic black.

I have been researching detailing products and have ended up with the following list:

Sonus Gloss shampoo

Sonus Der Wunder mitt

Sonus Ultimate Drying towels

Sonus Paintwork cleanser

Blue Perl microfiber applicators

Klasse AIO

Handi-Grip applicators

Klasse Sealant Glaze

P21S Carnauba

Sonus Der Wunder buffing towel

What do you guys think of this list?

Also, what do you use to apply the P21S?

Any other tips for looking after metallic black paint?

Thanks :)

:welcome

Your list looks good, congrats on the new car. We should ban you for not telling what VW you are getting, but seeing as you are new, we might let it slide. :D

As for tips on looking after black paint, be very meticulous with your wash regimen, the more often you rinse your mitt, the less likely you are to mar the finish and induce spiderweb swirls.

BTW, please try to keep your first few posts in the Autopia University section.

Please make sure your dealer does not prep your paint! I insisted on this and I'm thankful every day that I did!

I really like the Klasse twins on my black A4. Upon reading a few tips here on Autopia about the SG, it's a real snap to apply :up

As for washing if you want to get hardcore about it , do a search for Accumulator's washing technique.

excellent short list. I think people can provide the best feedback if you share your expectations: How often do you plan to wash and how often will you be able to wax. That's often the best place to start.

Good luck with the new car. Will it be the Mk5 Golf? Which engine, please? :D

Thanks for the replies. I'll make sure any other questions go in the University section.

What should I say to the dealer about preparing the paint? Surely they have to remove the delivery wax? I think they'll think it's slightly odd that I'm asking them to do such a thing!

Anyway, it's just a humble Volkswagen Polo TDi (1.4), but it's my first new car so I'm pretty excited!

Thanks again!

Please be sure they do not polish the car, there's no need for it, as you'll read all the horror stories we have at least over here in the States, you'll get a shiny new car with loads of cob web scratches  Be very firm about this. You'll even come across some tales here of folks who refused delivery beause the dealer didn't comply. You've worked hard and you are putting down good money, your car should appear *exactly* as you want it.

Believe me, they will think it's odd, an Autopian isn't the typical car owner :D. It's pure joy to own a brand new car that has been unmolested by the dealer "swirl installment department" :D :bounce

I know the feeling of the excitement. Lots of luck to you!

I asked for no prep when I picked up my Truck. They pulled the travel film and wiped of the windows only. Very large Ford dealer and there was no problem. I did stop back a few days later after I had detailed in with the Klass Twins and S100 and they wanted to put it on the showroom floor. :)

just be warned that vw clearcoat is very very hard. It doesnt respond to DACP. Im having major problems trying to get rid of the deep swirls in my brothers GTI. Just do your best to keep it swirl free. The hard clear helps in that, but its a pain if you make a mistake. My brother took it to a machine wash....Thats what caused the major problems....other than that. Love that VW.

So all I have to do is ask them to wash the car so that the delivery wax is off, but not polish it?

Honestly, don't let them touch the paint at all. They sould remove the shipping film, and that should be it.

OK, I just spoke to the salesman (seems a decent guy by all accounts, but I still don't trust him!!), and asked for just the shipping film to be removed. So, it's just having a wash and the interior vacuumed. Hopefully that's right! I said "please can you make sure the car isn't polished." He said that's fine.

Are you positive of the day it will arrive at the dealership? Tell them you want to be there when they prep the car.

There have been a few people here that have refused deilvery of a car because the dealer polished/waxed it even when they were told not to. If you don't trust your salesperson, definitely request that you be present when they to the pre-delivery inspection and prep.

Haven't seen anyone mention S100...

S100 is the same as P21S, but $14.95 at your local Harley Davidson shop. A foam applicator is included in the jar.

Oh yes,

Tell me about it! VW Audi paint is so tough its extremely rare when I can polish out the most minute defect visible only under 1000 watt halogens by hand! I almost always need the PC. It's very tempting to go right to the aggressive polishes too :(

As I have requested just a wash, what sort of state will my car be in? Am I going to need to do a lot of work to get it in a good state?

All depends on the materials and technique they use when they wash it. I don't mean to put you on edge, but I hope you don't get much marring.
