Detailing-How much?

Setec, While that is a somewhat good point to some detailers. First when someone is charging that much, durability better be #1 along with #1 in looks. Normally when I do a car, chances are I will do them once a year and I have seen cars I did last summer and they still look amazing.

If a customer wants to take there car through a tunnel wash and scratch it then that is there bad part on investment. Most of my customers will not even think of those car washes. Most of my customers are very fanatical with there rides and that is why they spend the money with me.

Now if one was to polish/glaze/ and wax then charge $400 and have it all wash off in 2 weeks then that is where the price plays the big role. You can put 20 hours into a detail and charge top dollar, but it is only worth as long as it will last. If it all washes off in 2 weeks then chances of repeat business will never happen and the high price was not worth it even if you put 20 hours into prep and you still only made $20 an hour minus product and expenses. But to the customer doesn't matter how long it took. They look at the big picture...How long will it look like this for.

A higher priced detail must have the best of both worlds...Dramatic looks along with long term durability and long lasting looks.

If one is charging $400 plus on a detail and uses products that will only last for 2 weeks then that is where the detailer needs to step up to more durable products

A high priced detail is only worth as long as it will last and that is what the customer will look at and judge.

I was in no way trying to compare a hack detailer with an Autopian-level detailer, only trying to compare the customers. Autopian-level detail is definitely a niche market, and it's only going to be a worthwhile service (in the long run) to someone who will maintain it properly or pay someone else to do so (or as a pre-sale fixup). You guys who are successful know who those customers are and how to find them.

I know what your saying. If you want to make the money than you need to find the market. Most people are use to seeing those specials and have no clue what really goes on behind the doors when it comes to speed detailing and total prep. Your average person thinks it's all just "buff and wax". Most car enthusiests know the difference between the two and will spend the money to have corrected the right way and will also pay extra for longevity.
