Detailing Flat Black?

On a more serious note, Maybe you want to consider some of that clear plastic being sold under the name Starshield. You have to look really hard to see it if applied properly and it may add a light gloss over your flat black. The car would also stay original.



I know their are more than one company selling this stuff under different names but I can only think of Starshield at the moment.



If I win the contest I'm taking Topanga Cyn. Road. Then to Gladstones via PCH, but I'm Parking it myself. I'll get an outdoor table where I can star at it while eating.
 
Well, I wound up just cleaning the flat black sections, and put a coat of wax. Looks good.



I did use a polish on the red parts of the car, but was careful not to use it on the flat black. I also used Mothers clay bar on the whole thing (Did that before polishing). I then waxed the whole thing with Zymol Carbon (I happend to have a bottle on hand).



Eventually, I'll switch to a different wax (P21s?), but I figured I would use up the rest of the zymol for now, even though it isn't that easy to buff off, and doesn't last that long. But, oh it smells nice...



The only problem with detailing this car is that now I am really aware of the imperfections in the paint. Lots of little scratches that really didn't come out by hand. Probably going to need a PC. Also little chips, etc. But, maybe in a year or so, I'll spring for a repaint.



Hmmm, maybe I should start trading rides for details...

Lowejackson, Yes, I still have the 164. It is my daily driver. It is in need of a detail very very soon. I love that car. Very civilized compared to the GT4. But, also damn fast. So now I have 2 fun cars...

So how long until you take her out to the track? I don't know if you've heard... but AROSC just lucked out and got a mid-may weekend at Laguna Seca! This is going to be a busy next couple of months... Willow Springs in Apri, Laguna in May, and Buttonwillow in June. :D



How's the 164S doing? I still miss mine, but the WRX is keeping me happy ;)

Hey Chip,



Not sure when. Hopefully sooner than later. The major issue I have right now is the harness installation. I can't install it like I had on the 164, since the seatback is too low (In a collision, the shoulder harness would probably crush my spine). I'm going to have to figure out how to install it. Probably going to require some drilling and welding. Damn.



There is a POC time trial on Mar 1 at Willow Springs that I would like to attend. I've heard that they do not require a 5-point harness.



Also, I need to check out my brake pads. Chances are, I'll need to be buying a set of Porterfield R4s.



The 164 is doing great. Drive it to work every day.

Dom- The car sure turned out nice :xyxthumbs . I'll go ahead and cast a vote for NOT repainting it. Work on the worst of the scratches one section at a time and see what you think as you go. Leave the chips, just don't let the ones on steel panels start to rust. IMHO, on a car like that, the minor imperfections lend a "patina of honest use" that can actually ADD to the personality of the car. And man, does that car have personality! :bow



What about having a "track days" seat that will better accomodate your harness?
