detailing engine

A Porsche detailer?! . Seriously, better off having nothing at all on the plastic and hoses. I think many here will agree.

Here is some info on the website, it has a flamabiltiy rating of 2 and a flashpoint of 131 degrees.

CLEANS: WD-40 gets under dirt, grime and grease to clean. It also dissolves adhesives, allowing easy removal of labels, tape, stickers, and excess bonding material.

DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because WD-40 displaces moisture, it quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits.

PENETRATES: WD-40 loosens rust-to-metal bonds and frees stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts.

LUBRICATES: WD-40's lubricating ingredients are widely dispersed and hold firmly to all moving parts.

PROTECTS: WD-40 protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements

I'm not saying WD-40 is a good idea, but it was worth a shot. It gave me great results. I don't know if I will do it again. What do you guys suggest as a good engine detailer? I a new here, so go easy.

thanks,

Steve

I'm a newbie...sorta...at least to engine detailing....

ANYWAY, what are some basics I can do to clean/dress engines of clients' cars? I don't want to do it yet, since I don't know very much about it...which parts should I cover, do you hose it down? Which parts of the engine do you use a cleaner on, which a dressing? Which dressings would you recommend that are safe?

Thanks,

Carl

I think the best approach to learning is reading up on the various threads about this topic. You will find very ample and well rounded answers to your questions and excellent tips and tricks.

JDookie, can you tell us when you spray the AA foam on the clean engine is anything covered or do you literally spray it on everything(except the Belt) without any problems. I know when applying the cleaner and using the hose that certain parts like the alternator, ECU etc.. are cover, but I was wondering how you apply the AA foam. Are these components still covered when applying the AA foam or do you just spray the foam all over anything? Will the AA foam damage any part of the engine(electricals)? thanks for the help

I never bother with covering anything. Even during the washing stage do I not bother with it. I just make it a point to stay away from danger areas with a steady stream of water and it always turns out just fine. As far as the AA, I don't cover anything before that either. I spray the entire engine down with foam and don't miss a beat, even the belt (not on purpose though). After it dries (about an hour or so), just come back with a cloth and wipe off any excess that might be left anywhere, and wipe off the metal surfaces.

Yeah thats exactly how I did and no problems, I didnt get a lint problem from the terry towels either. I even did the whole procedure to the underside of the hood.
