Detailing business questions

So today I grabbed my phone book and looked up a couple of detailing shops in the area and I went and put in my application at a few of them. None of them were really hiring anybody, one shop need an experienced buffer but the others said that with spring coming they would be getting busier and would be needing more help.

I personally have VERY little detailing experience. I worked at a Toyota dealership 10 years ago but that's it (y'all know that we can't call that actual detailing). When I wash my cars all I do now is wash and wax which is what brought me here so I can learn more. So my question is this, how can someone with little experience but a strong desire to work in the business get his foot in the door? I want to learn but my lack of experience will hurt me when they see my application.

So to you people that work in shops or have their own business, what can I do to stick out and make them hire me?

Here's an idea. Keep your own vehicle completely cleaned, polished and waxed so that the next time you go over to a detail shop for a job interview you can show them your own good work.

That's a good idea. Basically, you want to show them you have the skills to be a good detailer, even though you don't have an abundance of experience. In the meantime, practice, learn, and experiment on your own vehicle to become good at detailing.:up

Actually, I prefer people who have little detailing experience. No bad habits to break them of and I can train them my way. My kids are the perfect example-15 and 17 and can probably out-detail most weekend warriors.

What really matters is your enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Since this thread got moved to the Pro Detailers board I thought I'd give it a little bump and hope that a few more wonderful people (like you) would give me more suggestions or advice.

Thanks again
