I noticed that lol. Another one was one of my good friends asking me about the steps when detailing his truck. He always noticed me claying, polishing, and then sealing the car. He was wondering if the wax came after the polish so I explained to him that if he waxed first, then polished, he'd be taking off the coat he just applied. Only then did he realize he was doing exactly that for a couple of years.
 
I was doing a black 2004 Ford Escape. After I finished I was going to pull it down the driveway and park it in front of the house. What I didnt notice was that there was a fire hydrant at the end of the driveway. You guess it , I hit the hydrant , and messed up the right rear quarter panel. Made no money that day.

Damnnn did you end up paying for the damage? How much was the damage?

Oh Larry ,that really sucks! I did that to my own vehicle once. They are so low and hard to see.

When I got my first shope vac , I put it all together on level ground . I was so happy to have it and it looked great(really nice chrome machine) . I was about to put it in my van and had it in my driveway , let go for a split second and the incline of my driveway made it roll into my van and put a nice dime size dent in it. My first dent ,the van was perfect otherwise Boo Hoobut really I was happy it happened to me and not a customers car .That would have been much worse !

I quickly found a 2" by 4" and got some tennis balls nailed to each end and that was my Jimmy rigged brake and has been ever since. Customers dogs all think its a dog toy and want to play with it!:D
 
Yeah, I've stepped into the bucket too! The worst was trying to hurry up and change a pad on a rotary, tried to slow it down with my hand and found out how good foam works - took a little skin off, think "carpet burn".
 
In the early 80's i worked at a body shop and detailed fresh paint. mostly caddilacs, benz, lincolns, big turdbuckets... once in a while we'd get a jewel. So i had a 68 Chevelle competition orange on the floor & had wet sanded we went 600 then 1000 grit back then. 3M heavy duty thinned with water spread with a 4" paint brush from the metal can it used to come in...anyway. All edges, high spots taped doors opened a bit to buff "off edge"...I am leaning over the hood on the pass side and reaching for the middle when the door shut and a certain part of my pants was in the crease of the door. Ummm yeah. So there I stood with my junk pinched in the door AND I couldn't reach the door handle.....YEEEEOW. That was almost 30 yrs ago.... I was screaming & crying so loud... i got the car done eventually...it went to the super chevy show in seattle. wifey took care of the rest!
 
We all make mistakes.

I have made more than my fair share.

Fell off the back of a Ford Expedition once while standing on the rear tire to clay the roof, spray bottle of ONR broke & went everywhere and I landed in it & my back was soaking wet.

I was pressure washing an F-250 work truck last summer and peeled some of the blue oval off, it was already a little worn out though.

Was vacumming the trunk of a Honda Accord once and pushed my crevice tool too far into a crevice and made a crease in the cheap carpeting material.
 
Heres one of my blunders ....................Grit guard didnt fit pep boys bucket too well so I gave it a little push! Oops!:D

Its been sitting there for months now . I suppose I should just take a hammer to it and free the grit gaurd?!

Then there was the dash I broke trying to get a very old sticker off the inside lower corner of windsheild. I must not know my own strength! Weightlifter:biggrin:
I ended up buying him a brand new dash .....got a great deal on it!

I have to try to remember to remove my watch when detailing. One time the clasp snagged some of the door panel vinyl and then another time I ripped off the watch as I pulled my hand from under a very tight wheel well.
 
Last night; my first time to use the Porta Cable that I purchased here :D I read somewhere where you put a lil spray on the pad before using it?

Well.... I reached, I grabbed, I sprayed.......... tire dressing on it :huh:

Was the paint real slick and shiny afterwards or just smeary ?LOL:D

Im guessing you caught your mistake right away!
 
yeah... I figured it out quickly... my hand was nice and slimy tho....

Fashion Blunder.....
Worked on the Galaxie last night in the garage with the door shut (thankfully) and mid way I changed my clothes.
  • Light tan sweatshirt
  • plaid shorts (blue and green)
  • brown socks
  • white Sneakers

also thankful the wife works 2nd shift and wasn't home.

Thats what I love about detailing .....you really dont have to get dressed up for work. No one really cares!
