Detailing and your lungs

Hey NYD,

Actually, some of the most dangerous ones are ones that you can not smell!! Therefore, a person tends to stay around the chemical alot longer not realizing that the damage is being done! Moreover, as I discovered the hard way, many chemicals react very differently when mixed together.

Guys, trust me!! It is not worth taking a chance! We have all invested $1000's on product and equipment. A $30 mask is nothing compared to the alternative!:scared

One important thing folks....Dont mistake the use of a partical for for a respirator.....Particle masks' wont insure you from gas or chemical compounds......so pay attention to what they say they will protect you from.....

What about hands and skin protection as exposure to all the products we use may also have long term unknown side-effects?

if there was THAT big of a problem, wouldn't we know about it? There are many people who have been in this industry their whole lives and still perfectly healthy.

Does anyone have proof of any of these things having bad effects when used with good ventilation? Some real solid proof?

I guess the folks that have been doing it for years were cautious and used common sense.

So I shouldn't use DACP followed by AIO/SG on my electric toothbrush to whiten and seal my teeth? J/K Seriously my electric toothbrush is the only rotary I feel comfortable using.

FrOzen, I think inhaling Klasse and DACP will do you some good - it may help with the run on sentences. Shouldn't hurt. ;) (just kidding) I don't think they're harmful unless you actually eat the stuff or sniff it like you're blowing coke up your nose!

I'm not too worried about vapors. I just work outside where it is well ventilated and not use aerosols. The only one I use is Stoners Tarminator and that stuff is LETHAL (AMAZING product however).

don't worry fellas, something else will take us out before detailing products do :). Common sense (read the labels, ventilated area, wash your dern hands, etc.) is all you need, like don't scamper off to hand mix some bread dough right after doing a full detail.

I actually hate using QD. Even though the stuff smells good, i get irritated when breathing that stuff--and this is when I'm using it outdoors.

Thanks Yeah I understand the common sense part I always work outside also. And anyone that sniffs it purposly well there is nothing you can do for them anyways. I wear gloves with AIO and SG there tough to get out afterwards without.

I once went through a safety training class at work, instructed by a OLD fire captain....He said something that has stuck with me for many yrs....If you smell something, its scented, if its scented, its more than likely a man made substance, if its a man made substance, its more than likely there to hide a really obnoxious smell, it contains chemicals, chemicals are bad, chemicals are bad to inhale, bad to smell.....

The example he gave was Lysol brand spray disenfectant....Its made to "get rid of smell and kill 99.90 % infectious bacteria." Ever look at whats in that can ? Can you even pronounce whats in there ? Its pure chemical compounds.......Take a look at you air freshener in your bathroom or wherever it is, then wonder if you really want to be inhaling that......:nono

I would think that detailing products are somewhere a long that line but to a lesser severity......my $.02....

POST REVIVE!

I've learned the hard way to wear protection (no phun intended)

I've had metallic splinters lodged in my eye, I've had metal poisoning while cleaning rust off of a car, and have gotten high while painting :)

so every time i work on something i look like this:

Dust Gear

thats an old paint respirator (from your local hardware store) the activated carbon died a long time ago, but the mask is still good for big particles.

Splinter Guard and Sound Mufflers

Coroner face guard its better than goggles, more comfortable and protects the whole face, and the mufflers are great for sanding or working with loud machinery like the bench saw or cutting disk, if im going to go deaf its going to be from music :)

NBC Gear (Nuclear Biological Chemical)

This is a current issue UK military gas mask, I can safety state that if this is good to protect you from anthrax, tear gas and nuclear fallout its enough to protect you from turtle wax :)

A little over the top i know... actually started as a joke... but these masks are designed to be worn for a long time even days... so they are pretty comfortable.

NICE! LOL

The thought of getting a respirator has been on my mind for a while. I guess it's off to Lowe's and HD tomorrow to see what they've got. I hate the feeling of dry mouth and lots a nasty gunk in my nose after a full detail. I just picked up a gallon of Meg's WB, call me chicken but, there is no way I'm attempting to use it w/o proper protection, or polish another car without a good resp.

Never used a mask, I try to avoid the smell as much as possible. I do wear gloves with certain products, like bug/tar remover, degreaser, or when washing a vehicle. Extended exposure to polishes can make your fingernails curve or warp. I have evidence of this on my right hand, first two fingers, and I still can't bring myself to use gloves through a whole hand application. Even if I change gloves several times, after a while it starts to feel like wearing a soggy shirt, but on my hands, leading to loss of dexterity.
