Detailers domain pads, which should I get? Also, Meg's Swirl X questions.

So, I'm still trying to figure out the best approach to correcting the finish on my car on a budget (in other words, without having to purchase 10 different products). I returned the Meguiar's 7" pads as everyone here agreed they were just too big for use with the Porter Cable, and I am now looking at buying a 5" flexible backing plate and some 5.5" pads. I'm leery of the Lake Country pads as a few people are saying they got some that were cut badly, so now I"m looking at Uber pads from Detailers Domain. These come in five different types, and I'm not sure which I should go with if I were to buy only two.

The car is an '07 Mazda 3, red, that only has very light swirling and water spotting. I'm thinking I can go with the Uber Green Polishing and Blue Final Polish pads, and then wax by hand. Is the green aggressive enough for light to medium swirls and water spots? I have some Meg's Ultimate Compound and some Swirl X. So I figure try a spot with the blue and Swirl X, and if it doesn't do enough step up to the green and Ultimate Compound, then if necessary go over it again with the blue and swirl X.

Or maybe I'm completely off base again :) So please someone confirm if these combos will work before I place this order! I can go two levels more aggressive with the pads, the next two are the orange medium polish pad, and the yellow cutting pad. I'm 99% positive I don't need anything that aggressive though.

About the Swirl X, can someone clarify for me if this stuff actually reduces swirls or just fills them and reduces the APPEARANCE of them? The bottle claims that it is NON abrasive, which makes me think it doesn't reduce them at all.

EDIT: I see a few people are saying even 5.5" is too big for any real correction... should I go with a 3.5" backing plate and 4" pad like the Meg's soft buff 2.0 yellow, or even a 5" backing plate and the Meg's 5" MF pads? GAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH at this rate I'll never actually get to work on my car!!

I didn't make it through your entire post. I looked over and saw the Post Reply button and had a sudden urge to hit it

As far as the LC's being less aggresive then the DD's...If any, its not by much IMO. Certainaly not enough to justify buying another set of pads (budget)

If anything, go get a cheapo rotary

Skip the SwirlX and move straight to 105. If 105 acts a fool, try UC

As far as where SwirlX ranks in terms of abbressives...IDK. I never was able to figure out all the SMAT,CRAT PRAT, PHATT STUFF. "Just give me something that will work please" has always been my train of thought. I will let one of the smart members answer this

Good luck and God bless,

Yes, uber green and blue sound like a good start if you only have minor wash-swirling. You might even drop the blue and just get two greens. This will give you an extra pad to swap out after doing about half the car. I only use blue for glazes now, the green pad will finish down very nicely. You can use green for minor cutting and finishing just by changing the product. 5.5" is all I use for everythng. I've never used swirlX. If you want something OTC, you might be able to find megs 205 - only of my local Advanced Autos carries 105/205.

The green pads are what I use most of the time. Very versatile. Can cut more with heavier polish and more pressure, at the same time can cut a little less depending on polish and pressure. I don't know about your clear coat (hard/soft/medium) but green pad 5.5 and some Menz Power Finish should do a great job.

Walmart carries Ultimate compound and Ultimate Polish which is like 105/205 respectivly and cheaper per unit volumn I might add. No shipping cost makes it attractive.

Not to mention the dusting ;)

Wal Mart carries many hidden gems

Awesome, guys this was the exact type of input I've been looking for. It's been such a hard time trying to figure out exactly what pads to get. I have been thinking about just getting two greens as well and think this sounds like a great idea.

Still a little confused on the products to use. So I should ditch the swirl x and go with ultimate polish? I already have two bottles of ultimate compound and from what I've read that MAY finish well enough on its own. A Meg's employee was who recommended finishing with swirl x but felt it probably wouldn't even be necessary as the UC should finish pretty nicely. I will pick up some ultimate polish next time I'm at Walmart.

Maybe its almost the same like Poorboy's World Professional Polish which also contains no abrasives:think:
