Dentless Parking

short of defacing your car like that, I've found the best way to prevent dents is to park such that your car is parked next tpo the passenger side door of one car and with a concrete barrier on the other side. (Of course finding concrete on both sides is best, but almost impossible in most parking lots)



The way I figure, there is always a driver to a car, but the chance of there being a passenger is much less. With nobody getting out from the passenger side, there is no chance for a dent.



of course, passengers are usually less likely to car about either car invovled in a dent so when there is a passenger your chances of suffering a dent are increased.



I guess when you think about it, the only way to really prevent door dings is to hire a senty to monitor your car and shoot at anything that tries to park near it
 
Which do you want - an ugly car every time its parked, with scratches from the bumper rubbing the dust around, or a pretty car with door dings?

My M5 just got its second door ding this week. Now i can see one in the front door and one in the rear. Both are so minor most people wouldn't notice them - but I do. Keeping the car shiny doesn't help either. I "collect" them and when they bother me enough I take it to one of the paintless dent removal guys - they really do a great job.

Sometimes I think stuff like that just presents a challenge and opportunity for jealous ne'r do wells to see if they can "make your day" and dent it anyway, I don't know.



My wife once took my car to a wholesale outlet and parked in the boonies, (as per my instructions) where the nearest parked car was about 100 feet away. When she came out...there parked within 18 inches of her passenger door was a huge, circa (this her description- I wasn't there) 1975 Monte Carlo with primered trunk and hood, rusting apart elsewhere.

You try and tell me that person didn't seek our car out on purpose and I'll never believe you.



No damage luckily, I guess they just wanted to remind us we're never really safe. Sad though, because there's nothing worse than the brand new Mercedes' and Lexus' I see with door dings in them already.
 
Has anybody seen that advertisement on TV for the Ding King? One of those new products from Billy Mayes and the Orange Glo company...



I am skeptical of anything advertised on TV for $19.95 working! :rolleyes:

exactly! or park in a slight angle so that the other cars door has more room

People like my sister-in-law drive me nuts. While going anywhere with her, I constantly have to remind her to open the door carefully but anytime I forget to tell her, she seems to ALWAYS open the door and slam it against the car next to me. Once when we were all going to church (can't yell at her there), she commented on how narrow our parking space was and that the person next to me might ding me. So I figure I don't have to remind her this time, but she still slams open the door to my brand new Lexus right against the adjacent car, which was also a relatively upscale car (don't remember which). She also leaves fingerprints all over the door whenever she gets out of the car and likes to close the trunk with the palm of her hand right on the paint. Let's see, what else....oh, once she closed the door to my wife's bimmer with her foot b/c her hands were full and left some real nice scratches. I could go on and on... She is what you would call an autopian's worst nightmare.
 
The quest for no door dings is a never ending battle. I used to live in an appartment complex in College Station, TX (home of Texas A&M Univ. 45,000 students) and would sometimes move my car 4 or 5 times a night to strategically park it in an effort to protect it from the students. Even doing that I ended up with several dings. But the nice thing is that I have moved back to KS and have two car garage to park in and I am getting the dings removed as I type this!!!! It was truely scary to watch those "kids" park and exit their cars with the driver and passengers all hitting their doors on the adjacent cars :scared
 
Carguy, I feel your pain. Two months ago I purchased a new Grand Caravan and already have two dings in it. Plus, a truck going the opposite direction on a narrow country road hit my outside rearview mirror and scuffed the housing.



I vaguely remember a product sold through a TV ad that was essentially a long padded elastic band that hooked from front to rear on each side of a car to protect against dings. Admittedly, it looked silly but probably worked. Does anybody share my somewhat fading memory of this product?

But how would you deal with the person who dings your car if you witnessed the actual event? I was parked at a mall one time, and the driver of the adjacent vehicle "swung" her door carelessly and hit my door. It shook my car ( i was inside the vehicle) and when i inspected the damage there was a dime sized ding. I told the lady that she just dinged my car, but she just said sorry and walked away like nothing happened? WTF???



What should i have done legally, or is it too minor of a damage that i should just eat up? I was so tempted to kick or key her car, or even puncture her tires but better judgement prevailed and i am letteing karma take care of the situation.



Sorry for the rant, but what is usually the standard operating procedure when someone dings/scratches your car and you actually witneesed it?

I don't know what happens in the US, but here in Canada, if you take down the license plate of the car that dinged you, and you report it to the insurance company, they will ask the other car to come in to match paint. Once you report it, and they determine that it's a legit claim by examing your car (ie., the ding is not years old) they will call the other car in. Then it's up to them to prove they did not do it by providing a paint match. Very simple. But then we have crown insurance (only one insurer in the province for basic insurance for autos).
 
I have to admit.. I have dinged 1 car before. I lost control of the door and it swung out and hit the mini van next to our car. It was a deep fingernail ding. After that I've opened my cardoors slowly always.. BUT I HAVE DAMAGED A CAR!!! If i could ever forgive myself!!!



Anyways, the best I could come up for this is to have an "everyday" beater car... Which, of course, is treated the Autopian way.. meaning it looks better than 90% of what we see on the road. If it gets ding, it will hurt but not so bad. Try to confront them and ask them to pay for it. If that doesn't work let karma take over. No use wasting time with these degenerates.



And have your precious baby car.. That you drive only for special occasion like on a straight freeway going at 80mph on a cool summer night. Now if that get's ding, gloves are off, take out the uzi and start shooting. Or maybe slash their tires and tape a picture of their naked mom on their windshield.





Oh, I only have the "everyday" car.. still working on the second car.. LoL
