I have some Greased Lightning Orange Blast citrus degreaser, and I was wondering if it's safe to use on tires? The bottle says it can be used full-strength on tires, but my concern is that it would dry out the tires, and cause premature cracking. I tried it on the tires on my Accord, and they turned really brown and discolored (wouldn't rinse off), but after I followed up by washing them with Meg's GC soap like usual, they looked fine again. Any thoughts on whether or not this is okay on my tires?

Degreaser safe on tires?

It should be fine. Most tire cleaners are just degreasers anyway.
That'd odd about the brown stuff. Sounds like the degreaser was doing its job, and brought out the dirt - but maybe you needed to go a few additional hits of degreaser to wash it a second or third time. Were they very, very dirty (not cleaned in a long time)?

The tires weren't that dirty....if anything, they may have had built up layers of tire foam on them. I went over them a few times with the degreaser too (Spray with degreaser, scrub with a brush, rinse and repeat).
Slightly off-topic, I'm in the market for a good OTC water-based tire dressing. I've gotten tired of how messy and slick my towels are after I wipe off the excess dressing...which doesn't seem to wash off of the towels afterwards.

That browning is definitely silicone from whatever tire foam you were using (armorall tire foam?) You can keep using a silicone based dressing on your tires, just be sure to clean the tires thoroughly every time you wash to get the excess off. A water-based tire dressing will not last very long. One of my favorite OTC tire dressings is Eagle One Tire Shine.

Nope, I've been using Meguiar's Hot Shine foam lately, but I'm getting low. I'll have to check out the Eagle One stuff. Now that I remember, I've read a lot of good things about it. Looks like it comes in a spray bottle as well, which is good, because the aerosol cans don't seem to last me that long, and I've been wanting to give the spray-on dressings a shot. My only concern with the spray would be getting an even application.
