Deep Shine Last Night, Foggy Today???

OK, so my friend just got a brand new Tornado Red MKV GTI. He wanted to paint part of the hood black to match the grille. Well, I took it into the shop, taped it up and painted it. The paint turned out really well and it looked awesome. However, it had some trash it it and a gnat managed to land in the final layer of clear.:furious:

At any rate, when it was good and cured, I took some 1200 grit sandpaper and wet sanded down the gnat spot and the trash spots. It leveled out the clear very nicely.:) Then, I took a rotary with a wool pad and used 3M Imperial Microfinishing Compund to get the wet sand marks out. However, since I was using a wool pad, there was still some swirls.

So, I broke out the Porter Cable 7424 and the XMT series polishes. I first used XMT 2 with a Lake Country Orange Light Cutting pad. It cleared the paint up nicely. I then used XMT 1 with a Lake Country White Polishing pad. I then used XMT Carnuba glaze with Lake Country Grey Finishing Pad. Then, for protection, I added a coat of AIO. The paint looked completely flawless and deep under the light.:cooleek: So I sent him on his way.

I called him today and asked him how the hood looked under the sun. He said it looked foggy. I really don't understand why.:scared:

Did him driving right out into the rain have any effect on the finish? Did that mess with the fresh coat of AIO? Does anyone have any clue as to what went wrong? Is there a flaw in the system I used? How can I fix it?

If you need pics, I think I can get them.

You sealed (waxed) fresh paint? Isn't that a major thing to avoid before paint fully cures? Paint needs to breathe, and sealing it will make it dull and flat.

I waited over 3 weeks. I thought it was cured. However, it has been cold here. Maybe it wasn't totally cured.

I haven't had any problems sealing (waxing) that early before. I dunno. I have never painted black either.

Do you think the Klasse made it foggy?

What do you reccomend I do to remove the Klasse? Do you think if I took the klasse off and let the paint air out for another few weeks, it would be alright?

Should I just stop at the glaze?

You said it was cured fully 30 days for new paint I hope. I though AIO was a sealer, and was applied to paint that was clean, not after a glaze with wax in it, could that be the problem, or the clear coat was not properly polished Ive heard of white haze on black cars that have been compounded.

From what I know, new paint takes a few months to fully cure. I would strip off the AIO and only use products that don't leave anything behind. Try some Menzerna FPII to polish to a gloss and leave it bare. Let the owner know not to wax or seal the paint for at least three months.

Maybe my problem was adding AIO on top of a glaze.

Well, it was properly compounded. I had a 30 year vet of detailing watching me. We did it at his house. I don't think it was th compunding part.

Alright. I will try some polish and leave it bare and tell him not to wax or anything for a while.

Thanks guys.

OK. So can I use any polish to remove the AIO?

I have a PorterCable 7424 at my disposal with all the Lake Country pads.

I also have the whole line of XMT polishes, Meguiar's #2, Meguiar's #9, Meguiar's #3 glaze, Meguiar's Crystal Paint Cleaner, Meguiar's Crytal Polish step 2, 3M heavy duty rubbing compound, 3M Imperial Microfinishing Comund...

What combination should I use to remover the AIO? I am pretty sure that the fog has something to do with the AIO. I don't think it was my polishing.

Also, so if I use AIO over glaze, this would cause fog type stuff? OR do you think it has to do more with the paint not being cured enough? I think the paint was cured enough because it was right at 30 days. Plus, it was beautiful that night.

Is it generally not a good good idea to add AOI over any glaze? Did him driving right into the rain right after I applied the AIO have anything to do with it?

I have been detailing for about 4 years now, however, I am a noob to rotaries and DAs. I just got the DA for Christmas and I have had a rotary about 6 months now. I have worked with pros on with rotaries and DA to help perfect my techniques and make sure I don't screw the paint up and I am pretty confident with using them. But, I am still learning what combinations of polishes and waxes work the best. So if you guys could help give me some advice, I would be very gracious.

The Megs Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner should be good to get rid of the AIO. It does leave oils behind, so to see the true finish follow up with a wash using soap and water. Any product that says "body shop safe" should be okay. I'm not familiar with the other products you mention, but if they are strictly polishes (like Menzerna), should be alright.
