Decals on black paint for 2 years +

Ok. I stripped the vinyl off of Kia Suv for a customer. The SUV is black and has had the vinyl on for about 2 years. So as you can guess this thing has faded around the vinyl. It looks like hell to me. They want me to buff it so I tried some of it but its not looking that good. They are asking me to try wet sanding now. I have done some before and don't mind doing small scratches but a whole SUV is going to piss me off. Would this even fix it enough to be worth it? I'll try to post some pictues in a few minutes.

Hey James,
We've had some success with this company (www.x-kote.com). Black is touch. Try wet sanding a section, but remember that Kia Paint sucks; don't go too far, it is quite thin, especially on plastic panels.

Here are some pictues.

I wish I could turn this one down. They have been good to me so I have to do it. We spent a somewhere between 4-6 hours to remove the decals and glue. Still finding spost of glue. I might try to talk my way out of doing anymore to it. Its giving me a headache at this point.

2 years?

That is plenty long enough to have permanent fading effects. I would say it will be close to uniform (look wise) after a heavy compounding and polishing section, but I really do not think it will be 100%.

I went pretty heavy on a section to test that and wasn't happy with it at all. I was hoping it was just the lights I was using so today I hauled it out of the shop to look at it in the sun. :wall Looks like hell. You can still see Rosie the cow. I tried to get the guy to come over and look at it but he is busy. So I will wait for now and let him look at it Monday. I don't know if I can be happy with this one in the end. I hope to make them happy but by the looks of it I won't be.

Keep in mind that the fading is probably because the finish was neglected.
There is nothing you can do about that.
You sometimes have to accept the fact that the old paint is not going to be salvaged. I had that happen on my son's neglected red Honda. I could barely make it look decent and it would only stay that way for a short time. The paint seemed to be lifeless. Frustrating, but it had to be accepted.

I'm sure it was neglected plus the fact that you have on a decal which must be like 1000 spf sun screen protecting the paint. Then you have the paint beside it unprotected. I'm not even sure if it was ever waxed before we started dealing with them. We tossed on a wax while cleaning it for them a few times but I remember looking at the paint thinking about how bad it would be when the decals were removed. I just never thougth I would be the one removing them. :wall BTW I took another look on my shelf to see if I had anything on there that I haven't tried yet. I forgot I had some Malco Rejuvenator. I tried some of that and it seems to be doing an ok job so I'm going to give that a shot then haul it outside again and see how it looks. Even though it looks better if you look at it at the right angle you can still see where the letters were. Its like a scar. The clear seems to be raised. I was talking to the vinyl guy I know and he said he was told that as soon as you put it on they react in a way the will do that. There is no way to avoid it.

I was asked to post this on another forum so I thougt I would add it here as well so you can see what I'm dealing with.

Let's see the pics showing the results so we can suggest further.

Ok. Keep in mind that these are quick test spots.

Untouched.

i feel your pain, i have done many aprts truck at teh dealer like that. it is frustrating because it will look good for only a little while. your best bet is to explain that it will continue to show edges of the stickers for a while and maybe give them a deal to come back every 6 months or so for a maintenance deal. repeat business is always good.eventually it will fade even but that will take a long time. good luck.

I thought I would add some more pics.

Me working.

You can see the paint condition and the outline of Rosie the Cows behind.

Here you can still see the outline if you look hard enough.

Still a work in progress. Light a match.

BTW he picked it up the other day and he loved it. He said he would have something else for us in a week or so.
