De-winterizing a Volvo 850R

You could only imagine what I had to work with when using a title like that :D.

The owner, Travis (mesoam), contacted me in regards to having his 1996 Volvo 850R detailed to get rid of the winter wrath. He sent me a couple pics showing the damage of the slush, sand, and general winter damages. The pics didn't look great, but once I got there today and put the car in front of the 500w halogen, it looked worse :(. Given all of this, apart from the heavy swirling and such, the car was "clean". There were very few bonded contaminants, it beaded well, tires were dressed, etc. I'm sure from now on, she will be looking tip-top :xyxthumbs .

Travis is the second owner of this rather rare car. He can't remember ever having it machine polished and by my best judgement, the previous owner hadn't either. Some of the defects were very deep and wouldn't come out 100%. I'd say the car is 95%+ better than it was with a couple stray deep marrs here and there. The chips were greatly reduced and the depth/gloss took on a whole new meaning. Here we go:

Clean
-CG Maxi Suds Wash with Black & Decker pressure washer to assist
-Optimum Clay with CG Maxi Suds to lubricate
-Hi-Temp Tire Cleaner cut 50/50 on tires and wells agitated with respective brushes
-Meguiar's Wheel Brightener cut 3:1 on wheels with respective tools.

Defect Removal
-Hi-Temp Heavy Cut via rotary and LC Cutting Pad @ 1500 rpm (leave residue on panel)
-Optimum Car Polish via rotary and LC Polishing Pad @ 1200 rpm (remove both residues with FK1 #425 assist)
-Optimum Car Polish via rotary and LC Finishing Pad @ 1200 rpm

Protect
-Z6 Wipedown
-Z2 Pro by hand
-Z8 by hand when removing Z2 Pro

-Poorboy's PwS on glass, wheels, and tailpipe
-Meguiar's Hot Shine Tire Foam on tires/wells
-CG VRT on trim

THIS IS WHY PICTURES ON THE INTERNET CAN BE DECEIVING. This is a before shot...

wow! Quite a difference before and after. that's amazing! and on black too, that is very impressive, course everytime i see your works it amazes me.

I like the paint correction pictures. Shows talent as well as product doing there work. I do not want to sound dumb here but the after pictures are showing rock chips ...Correct? I am slowly getting those marks on my truck.

Intersting dressing on the tires. Very subdued. As are the wheels. Unique to my world of wheels. From the angles of the pic's I like it. Make the car more interesting than I thought they were.

I spoke of subdued earlier. Maybe understated would be a better word. It seems that it is the theme to the whole detail. Is the paint just less robust becasue of the previous owners lack of care? I am not saying it does not look good. It does, really!! Maybe it is the over cast skies?

Do you think that the Hi- temp and Optimum combination does not finish as well as Menzerna Polishes?

It's a Volvo dude... they don't look anything other than subdued :)

And yes, those are rock chips.

Thanks everyone.

cwcad: I see what you are saying. The after shots outside don't look "amazing" because, yes, there is an overcast. You can see though, with the shots "that count", the color/depth/reflection/wetness has increased 10-fold over the befores. Menzerna might have finished a touch better, but the FPII was jumping all over the panel for some reason.

One thing I would like to note and I know that Jngrbrdman will agree with me here...Pictures on the net are deceiving, as per the first shot. Most people like posting shots of the shady side of the vehicle with bright objects on that side signifying outstanding reflections. However, at the end of the day, you *should* be taking pictures in direct sunlight to show off your detailing work.

Sean,

Breath taking transformation as usual. Nice idea, leaving the heavy cut residue on and taking off with OP. I had a bear of a job Friday (and of course forgot my camera) of an abused black Lincoln Town car. I had to break out the Powergloss and your idea would have saved me time and effort.

Again, I bow to my mentor...:bow

Who said an old dog cant learn new tricks???

Thanks Sean!! My comments were not meant to diminish your detail, pictures, or thread. I asked purely as an honest observation of what was before me in the post presented.

Thanks all.

cwcad: Sorry if my post came out with a negative tone (damn net :)). I put that info down because many (not saying you or anyone in particular) think bright reflections equal a great detail.
